Here's my question for those of you who view the Alito nomination as an "oh no!" ... based on what we know right now (meaning short of any sort of "he left pubic hairs on my diet coke can!" revelations) do you believe there are any legitimate reasons to vote against him right now?

Yeah. He's a conservative. Need a more moderate justice.

So should Ginsberg have not been confirmed? She was a well-established liberal replacing a moderate.

That the President felt she was the best person for the job wasn't enough for some. So Alito doesn't have to get one either. Or anyone else Bush nominates. Mmkay?

Gee Shin, maybe instead of voting on him for the Supreme Court, we should be impeaching him from the appeals court ...
Meiers kept herself from getting an up or down vote. Her confirmation hearing was set, and she would have gotten a vote. It likely would have been a no vote, andshe likely would have embarassed herself and the president in her confirmation hearings. But she kept herself from getting that up or down vote - not the Senate.

I'd love to see a senator ask this question at the confirmation hearings :
“Mr. Alito, what makes Harriet Miers a better judge than you, considering that Bush said she was the best candidate?”

That and I thought it clever, alas... Miers is a Jewish last name? News to me. Not sure about Miers but John Kerry's real last name is definately Jewish. Both of his paternal grandparents were Ashkenazi Jews with the surname Kohn. The family changed their name to a more Scottish/Irish sounding name due to the ill feelings against Jews. As a matter of fact historians and geneaologists think he is a descendant of the famous Rabbi Judah Loew Maharal of Prague. Wesley Clark is also of Jewish rabbinical background, his real father's last name is Kanne which Wesley uses now as a middle name and I believe it is either his father or grandfather that was a rabbi. After his father's death his mother remarried a man named Clark.

That's certainly NOT the answer, as everyone in the entire world other than our President acknowledged that there were plenty of fully qualified women (i.e. far more qualified than Harriet Miers) who he could have nominated. There's way more too it than the fact that she is a woman.

Well if you believe Dobson, they had to nominate a woman, and the other candidates who met the criteria refused the opportunity.
