Well...I don't really know if they're "broken." I'm sure RS could care less if they're old message boards are archived online, and will probably never take any measures to get them there. So really, all you're ever gonna have is what you can spange from archive.org.

Oh, I realize that this "WayBackMachine" has nothing to do with Rolling Stone.com... I'd be interested to know how they obtained all this stuff and if they plan on making it a bit more user-friendly...

That link takes me right to the current RS homepage. Ah! After I realized the link was too long and c/p'd it into the url window (and took out the extra space), it worked.

Dr. Botanus! I forgot how much that dude used to crack me up... a funny bloke indeed!
I agree with Luke's point though - those old RS boards were definitely a bigger more wide reaching forum with a bigger diversity of ideas and or / nutjobs - The diversity of people and ideas I do miss, the nutjobs... I'm not sure I miss those...lol!

I wish we could get that kind of a cross section over here! Not that we've done too bad, though!
Really, those archives might be useful for mining some email addys for people we've missed, and letting them know we're here. A lot will be outdated, though... Plus, I'm sure a few more wayward souls will show up at RS now, and we can snatch them! ;D

What was nice over at the old Rs.com site was the sheer numbers of posters and boards ...
Sure there were trolls and board bombers and the plain idiots and the flame wars but we also got newbies, cliques, people with different interests you didn't had to care for but could read anyway from time to time; more personal boards for small groups of posters or even secret boards ... !!

strat-o- Sorry I ignored you when you said that about the link the first time! I was posting from work, where I sometimes miss things.
I look at places like Top Ten, the Coffeeshop, and the Lounge, and it just fucking blows my mind the way that 50,000 posts just fly the fuck by. That's crazy. There were threads there- threads chalked with meaningful discussion- whose post count was bigger than that of this entire forum.

Well, the trade off of having a somewhat more private board here with safeguards against trolls is that we don't get the influx of new people. The same thing that attracted trolls to RS.com is also what occassionally brought in some really great new posters. This board isn't really built for bringing in randoms--anyone new has to be brought in by someone already here.
