Nice list! You’ve got some pure classics on there. Nice to see Clockwork (a personal favorite) and Rear Window as well.

Cool list Mary, how did you find out all the years of the releases?
I watched The Commitments yesterday for the first time in like 7 years. What a great movie. If I can only find the soundtrack I'd be really happy. Where the fuck is that CD? *scrambles around trying to find it*

Great call on Die Hard.
Haha, did anyone here ever see that Simpsons where Homer was writing a letter to Die Hard? Some FBI people that were spying on Homer were talking about what an idiot he was. One of them goes, "Some people write letters to their favorite movie stars, this guy writes letters to his favorite movies."
Cue Homer writing a letter:
"Dear Die Hard,
You rock
p.s. Tell Mad Max I said 'hi.'"

Man I rented ALIENS SPECIAL ED the other day, cuz my young friend had never seen it, and it was his first assignment before watching ALIENS vs PREDATOR (His second assignment is watching PREDATOR -- which he's never seen either) I have determined, after alternating between the Purist's opinion that the original is the best & the opinion that Cameron's was the best, once and for all I hereby deem [shadow=red,left,300]ALIENS[/shadow] to be the best one of all. Any dissenting opinions--? Who's with me on this-?

Alien (the original) is the best film in that series. Aliens is good, but it's really just an action/adventure film, while the original is simply one of the very best horror films ever made. Probably Ridley Scott's finest work, all things considered.

Ken . . . you have most elegantly bitchslapped me in my place. Guess I was all overexcited about just having seen ALIENS for the first time in many a blue mooncuz I believe your opinion to be the superior one.

I like Aliens a lot, but it just can't match the incredible tension, the fear, that Scott summoned up for the original. And the cast in the first film is superior as well -- Yaphet Koto, Tom Skerrit, etc. It's not a great horror or sci-fi film, it's a great film that happens to be set in space and be scary as hell. One of my all-time favorite movies.

Hey Clubber - Yeah part of why that was such a massive endeavour was finding out the years of movie releases and trying to fill in as many years as possible. First I went through an earlier list I made a while ago of my all-time favorite movies, and looked them all up in my roomie's Video Movie Guide to see their years. Then for the leftover years I went to imdb.com and they've got rankings of the top 50 movies per decade, so I looked through those to see if there were any really excellent ones that I'd seen and loved. Then I supplemented that with this film professor dude who has this massive web page on the histry of film where he goes through decade by decade in chronological order listing all his favorite movies and various crtiically acclaimed classics and stuff. I only looked at these lists to jog my own memory of course, there's nothing on my list that I didn't see and love myself... By the way the dude's web page is at: www.tc.umn.edu/~yahnk001/film/cinema.htmIf you have any interest at all in film history, it's a great resource. Cheers, M

Oh shit, I totally remember that Simpsons episode when Homer wrote the letter to Die Hard. That was fucking brilliant. I love Homer Simpson sometimes.
re: Alien and Aliens... ya know, i'm kind with thorny here. I can see from the standpoint of film artistry why Alien is a superior movie, but I just had a much better time watching Aliens. It's like the ultimate popcorn flick. Sure, not much substance, but one of the best damn roller coaster rides you can ever have in front of a movie screen. I could see and appreciate that Alien was a beautiful piece of work, but it didn't actually have much of an emotional impact on me, and it certainly never scared me - maybe I saw it too late in life, already knowing too much about it, and already having seen all the sequels....
Cheers, M

[glow=green,2,300]but I just had a much better time watching Aliens[/glow] ~ mary ;D That's it EXACTLY, blaney. Cameron's film may not have the atmosphere of horror that Scott's original had, but it sure was more of a blast to sit through. I suppose it's a "Toss Up" between the two, depending on how you look at them...

Awesome list Mary. You're a real cineaste.
I haven't seen Alien or Aliens, but from what I've heard, Aliens would probably be more up my alley.

Revisiting the Stepford Wives. (the book… original by Levin) & not some hasty Kidman movie tie in trash. Speaking of which. Not sure how I feel about a remake of this one, seems like sacrilege as its such a campy classic I don’t see how justice could be done. Anyone have any preformed takes on the new one? For me the only possible redeeming feature might be Middlers appearance.

Bette Middler is in it -? cool
The 1 thing that *kinda* gives me some hope is the fact that Frank Oz directed it. However, hasn't he directed some real stinkers before~?
So yeah . . . I don't know. I just like the subject matter. And if he stays more or less true to the Levin book -- it might be aight. (I never read it, I just know Ira Levin is one kickass author)
