I listen to a ton of 80s vinyl and I wonder if it may have been the last true experimental music decade. I know that sounds pretentious and stupid, but there was a lot going on in that decade.

There certainly was. Quite an overlooked decade. Needs re-examination.

The eighties rocked! You had Warrant, and Winger, and White Lion, and ... Oh wait, I thought this was about how the eighties mainstream rock sucked. The good stuff was all "left of the dial" as Mr. Westerberg put it, and the good stuff was brilliant. I'll put the first half of the decade up against pretty much any other five year span in rock. Hell, '80 to '84 was just packed with killer material at the edge of the mainstream, and just outside it. Stuff you could walk into pretty much any record shop and find w/o too much trouble. The eighties rocked! or sucked, depending on what you listen to.

The 'artists whose names start with W' count is awfully high in that post.

Heads would've exploded if he included Whitesnake.

I'm sure Strat included a rule about no more than one W artist per post. Without rules like this, online forums would be hotbeds of anarchy.

I will readily admit to having Warrant on my iPod - sorry, I still dig 'Cherry Pie', even after that terrible video.
But the White Lion guys should all have been strung up by their balls for the wretched, saccharine, horribly awful awful awful 'When the Children Cry'. God, that song blew.
Signed, The girl who listened to Poison and Lita Ford on the way to work this morning.

I should've included Whitesnake, and Waterboys, and the Waitresses, and ... damn, there were a lot of W bands in the decade of big hair.

c'mon, there's no way that's better than Elton John and Kiki Dee's immortal "Don't Go Breaking My Heart."

The eighties rocked! or sucked, depending on what you listen to. The 80's do get shitted on, hell, I do my share, but there were some amazing albums/songs from that decade. Even the cheesy pop stuff had moments, or at least was memorable.... My big problem w/ the 1980's is the sound/production; especially with the drums....I have a friend who's convinced there was only one drummer for the whole decade. Thankfully in the 1990's the drummers struck back...Even my man Jack Irons sounds a little dull on the Chilli Peppers MoFo Party Plan album...Go listen to the drum sound on Sister, then pop in Dirty; huge difference.

Possible big hair aside, they deserve wayyyyy better....... Actually, Waterboys and Waitresses were tossed in just 'cause they both began with W. I wouldn't put either in with all that other crap. Been listening to a bunch of Waterboys lately, actually. The first EP (with enough bonus tracks to make it a full cd now), A Pagan Place, This is the Sea ... not perfect, but great Big Music.
