It's all a matter of being able to seperate (to a certain extent anyway) knowledge from opinion...which granted in any of the arts is often a hard thing to do because it works on both levels. It's not a bad thing to like crap, it's all about being able to admit it, being able to put it all in actual context and understand why it's crap and why you can still like it. Yeah.

I've yet to figure out the point, which is why I've stuck to tangents. BTW, Paul Westerberg is still god, in case any of you were wondering. NP: Favorite Things - the mighty 'mats

Now, about whether rockjism is good or bad, I would think that any kind of myopic "my music is the only valid music" attitude becomes detrimental, certainly to any experimentation and deviation. That's not exactly a correct characaterization of what rockjism is about though. rockjism is very open to other kinds of music besides Rock. In fact if you look at Rock Music throughout the years you will see that it is incredibly diverse, look at all the different genres of Rock and also look at all the international music Rock has taken in. See, I'm not interested "in general." If you want me to speak in general terms, well then most of the stuff that the corporate music industry puts out here is crap, and it can stay that way for all I care. Why arent you interested in the 'general'? I think if you can understand the general trends of the industry it make you more educated and more likely to sidestep the pitifalls that the 'general' way presents. For instanst if you understand the general way that a marketing or PR campaign is approached by Pop artists, it will let you see throught he BS--anything from ringing endorsements from 'independent' media sources to choreographed PR appearances, etc. It's about knowing thy enemy and all that jazz... I didn't get any of this from the articles that were mentioned above. If a rockist is just some sort of uber rock fan, then this argument kinda bores. What distinguishes a rockist from anyone else (by my reading of the articles) is his ardent belief in the supremacy of the rock aesthetic. Right, that's basically what I said, but I wanted to stress the point that the more you know about Rock, the better you understand its aesthetic (an aesthetic that has evolved over the years and is still in constant flux)...

The articles posted at the very beginning of this thread positioned rockjism as some sort of religion whereby adherents were closed to or skeptical of anything that wasn't "rock". I am saying that is bad. If rockjism is not that, then what is rockjism? Is it just rock appreciation? If so, then everyone here is a rockist.

Rockist attitudes is the belief that only the rock and roll setup in music is best. it's like the major twentieth century cultural trend, as major as we've ever had.
