I should have clarified...when I typed VU I was refering to the self-titled 3rd album; I flip-flop between that and Loaded as my faves.
Beatles: Revolver. Abbey Road is damn close, and Rubber Soul is right behind those two.
Really, for me, it's a toss up between those albums and the White album. All 4 are fantastic.
I feel like I should listen to more REM. I really don't know too much about them...I know Automatic for the People, and Monster really well, the rest I only know bits and pieces. Any recomendations on where to start? Murmer?
I flip-flop w/ the Stones too...I could have easily voted for Beggars, Let It Bleed, Exile, Aftermath, or Between the Buttons; I love all those albums, but I listen to Sticky Fingers the most. IMO "Sister Moriphine" is one of their best songs.

IMO "Sister Moriphine" is one of their best songs. There were two Velvets odds 'n' sods collections that came out in the eighties, VU and Another View. They had some really good stuff on 'em (most of which is on the Peel Slowly and See) set, but they weren't "albums" in the sense of the four released in the band's lifetime. PEW's reference made it clear that this was what he was referring to, rather than to the (brilliant) self-titled 1969 release. Yeah, Murmer is an essential R.E.M. touchstone. If all you've heard are AFTP and Monster, you need to get Murmer, Reckoning, and Document (at a minimum). Those are all contenders for the band's best album, and essential listening, IMHO.

Beatles – Revolver Velvet Underground – With this band I'm another 'depending on the day' type – on a given day it's going to either The Velvet Underground and Nico or The Velvet Underground. Today, though, The Velvet Underground and Nico. The Who – Who's Next is the monument and The Who Sell Out a strong contender in its conceptual brilliance but in my heart-of-hearts Quadrophenia is the one I really love. Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here REM – Murmur Talking Heads – Another toss-up: Fear of Music or Remain in Light but IMHO the first four are all amazing... Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti

Did not expect the concensus on Revolver/Rubber Soul here ... I'd expected a few more people chiming in with The Beatles (the white album). I'm a bit down on the white album right now, it's just so messy (not necessarily a bad thing) and seems really, well, overdone compared to Revolver/Rubber Soul, and Abbey Road.
Oddly enough, the Beatles LP I've been listening to the most over the last few years is Paul's Let It Be ... Naked. Absolutely love the stripped-down versions of these tracks. I can't listen to the Specterized version of the title track, which might just be Paul's best song, ever.

The second record of The Beatles drags it down...it's unfocused and messy (and Rev. 9 is just fucking awful)...there's some great stuff there too but it still drags down the brilliant first record.

Yeah, if The Beatles had just been one album, it would've been pretty hard to argue with. But both Revolution #9 and Good Night are (at best) throwaways.
I'd rather listen to nothing but heyfoxymophandlemamma (that's me) for a week than suffer through Revolution #9 again. Ugh.

Beatles: Rubber Soul Velvet Underground: Velvet Underground and Nico The Who: Who's Next Rolling Stones: mmmmm, dunno, because with the Stones, I mostly just listen to a few of their representative singles that I really like. Pink Floyd: bleh. REM: they're all about equally useful as cures for insomnia, so i vote TIE Talking Heads: Fear of Music Led Zeppelin: ooooooooverrated The Kinks: Something Else by the Kinks
Cheers, M

The Beatles - Abbey Road The Velvet Underground - White Light, White Heat The Who - Sell Out The Rolling Stones - Exile is the only one I listen to with any kind of regularity. Pink Floyd - Meh REM - Meh Talking Heads - Remain in Light Led Zeppelin - II The Kinks - Meh
It's worth noting that none of these albums are as good as Pet Sounds.

I'll just do three of 'em for now.
Beatles: Revolver by leaps and bounds. All of the ones I've heard (everything Rubber Soul and beyond, I believe) are dandy, but that's the one Beatles album where I deeply appreciate each and every song... though my personal favorites are I'm Only Sleeping, Tomorrow Never Knows, and the dreamy flawlessness that is Here, There and Everywhere.
Velvet Underground: Only VU album I'm not head over heels in love with is Loaded. I guess I have to give the edge to the banana album because it's just so damned diverse (and, of course, it has Nico), but The VU's right up there with it.
REM: I think their last two albums are as good as anything they've done. Basically, give me something that isn't Up (which, for all I know may be good, but I haven't had the urge to try again... guess it's their Pop), and I'm satisfied. Not many bands have as long and brilliant of a history.

You like Around the Sun? I just find that record absolutely beyond sleep-inducing boring.
Reveal is really good, though. Not as good as Murmer or Reckoning, but awfully good.

I like Around the Sun as much as anything they've done. Off-hand, more than Up and Out of Time.
