Billy played some, Doug played some, the engineer (Adrian something-or-other) and a drummer named Tommy that they got from the musician's union played some. Billy played their live dates at Max's Kansas City that summer. I have a breakdown of who played what on that album somewhere if you're interested. A lot of it is pretty interesting to see...Doug played a lot more guitar on that album than you probably think, including the two great guitar solos ("Rock and Roll" and "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'"). Rocky, what do you think of VU's "Squeeze" the one that was basically a Doug Yule album with the Velvet Underground name attached to it? I've only heard it bits and pieces and wasnt motivaed enough to pursue it any further...what's yoru take?

This can be kind of a revolving thread....do the bands Mantis listed next, then come up w/ another 8 bands (give or take).....
Black Sabbath - Masters Of Reality Pearl Jam - No Code Radiohead - OK Computer David Bowie - Aladdin Sane Neil Young - Zuma Bruce Springsteen - The Wild The Innocent and the E St. Shuffle Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Really, I don't own all of the albums from most of those bands, so I'm judging based on what I've heard/own....I only have 2 Bruce albums, and currently I'm digging the Shuffle more than Born...I only own 1 Beach Boys CD, and that's Pet Sounds, I have 5 Neil albums, all of Pearl Jam's, I have 5 Radiohead albums, 2 Bowie albums, and 2 Sabbath albums.
I guess this round I'm not as knowledgable as I should be.

I've only heard it bits and pieces and wasnt motivaed enough to pursue it any further...what's yoru take? It's been a long time since I've heard it, but from what I remember it was pretty bad. I just have a dubbed cassette copy somewhere (and I have no idea where). That album of course has historically been erased from the VU discography, and it's pretty universally panned. It's really not quite as bad as history has labelled it, but it isn't much better from what I remember. And it certainly isn't a Velvet Underground record. Basically Doug Yule did his own personal little spin on the Loaded sound (and even wrote a sequal to "Sweet Jane" called "Jack and Jane"). Some of it works so long as you're able to divorce yourself from the idea that you're listening to the Velvet Underground. Most of it doesn't though. It's pretty watered down pop music, and not even all that catchy.

Black Sabbath - who really cares ... all you really need are the Iron Man and Paranoid singles. Pearl Jam - traditionally I'd say No Code, but I've got to be honest here and say that their new one is seriously in the running for this, so I'm going to go with the Live on Two Legs set instead. Radiohead - Hail to the Thief (it may or may not be better than OK Computer, but I like it better). David Bowie - "Heroes" Neil Young - none of 'em are that good ... give me Live Rust if I have to listen to anything by Neil from start to finish. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run (though The River, Nebraska, and Tunnel of Love are all just as good) Beach Boys - Endless Summer (Pet Sounds is incredibly over-rated: The Beach Boys were a singles band, and this is the definitive singles collection ... hell, you could probably just get away with the Good Vibrations single and nothing else).

Fuzz, have you heard either No Code or Avocado? Both are top notch my friend. No and yes. Here's my Pearl Jam history: Like everyone else in 1992, I had Ten. I liked it enough. When Vs. came out it bored the pants off me, so much so that I didn't like Ten anymore. Yield was the last one that came out that I paid any attention to at all, and I didn't like it either. So I basically gave up on them, moved on to greener pastures. Fast forward to maybe 2-3 years ago, I decide to give them another go, buy Vitalogy. It's just alright, doesn't really set my world on fire or anything. Then I hear everyone hee raving about the new one, download it, and it's more of the same. Just doesn't really do anything for me. In general, the musicianship is pretty good, but I can't really get past Ed's vox. PJ is just middle of the road for me. To be honest, I'm kinda surprised you haven't asked me about them before, seeing as how I never post on the PJ board or talk about them at all.

Beach Boys - Endless Summer (Pet Sounds is incredibly over-rated: The Beach Boys were a singles band, and this is the definitive singles collection ... hell, you could probably just get away with the Good Vibrations single and nothing else). Pet Sounds is precisely when the Beach Boys stopped being a singles band. If all you're interested in is pre-65 sun and surf singles then you are absolutely correct.,,,from '66 on can be highly rewarding if you can get past that notion. I almost never listen to those early singles anymore. I've heard them a million times and they're boring. After Pet Sounds they got into some really weird and interesting stuff. Granted some of it doesn't work but some of it is brilliant. Pet Sounds, Smile, Surf's Up, Sunflower and Wild Honey are five star albums.

You can't be serious about those post-Pet Sounds records, Mantis. Unlistenable messes is more like it.
Of course, I'm not wild about any of the Beach Boys output, really, so I'm probably not the best person to comment on them. Mike Love bugs the hell out of me ... not to Morrison or Morrissey levels, but he's plenty annoying.
