Wham were a fucking joke, admittedly. Early Spandau Ballet (first two albums) wasn't stuff you should sneeringly dismiss as "gay" without first hearing it, unless you actually want to display your ignorance. Yes, it's easy to sneeringly pick up on their True/Gold days, but that doesn't see the whole picture. Thompson Twins weren't really my bag. Duran Duran were and are fucking brilliant, frankly. Even music snobs buy into that now, I thought? Culture Club? Meh. But you've picked the worst stuff out selectively. LOL! Duran Duran was fucking brilliant?!? Maybe to a teenage girl or a gay guy or someone who is drunk at a wedding--same goes for spandau ballent...I know, I know, I know, this much is true.

Duran Duran are great. Their Greatest Hits CD I have is one the best GH CD's I own. They were more of a singles band though. Their albums were never really great from start to finish [although some might argue Rio comes pretty damn close].
I have one Spandau album on vinyl. Actually, it was my sister's and she left it with me [along with all the other albums on vinyl she ever bought] when she moved out. It's a great album, I think it's called "Diamond". Has some fine tunes on it. "She Loved Like Diamond", "Paint Me Down" and "Chant #1 (I don't need this pressure on)" to name 3. I wish my turntable still worked... I'd give it a spin. Unfortunately, the album that followed was "True". Then it was all downhill after that.

Girls On Film A View To A Kill New Moon On Monday Union Of The Snake Planet Earth Come Undone
and there are more. those are the ones I can think of right now.
However, I will admit hating "Is There Something I Should Know?" and "Wild Boys". Can't stand those 2.

They bring back memories of valley girls in neon colored leg warmers at shopping malls...fer sure.

Some Duran Duran tracks I love ...
Hungry Like the Wolf Rio Save a Prayer Please Please Tell Me Now (I like it) Girls On Film (great video, too) Ordinary World (god this is a gorgeous track ... talk about perfect songs!)
There are more, I'm sure ... it would be no problem to come up with a ten or twelve song "Greatest Hits" set that would be a hell of a collection. Duran Duran were an excellent singles band, and (honest to god) they were a more artistically succesful and satisfying band than the Doors, or the Grateful Dead.

Oh yeah ... Come Undone, that was the other "comeback single" that I was trying to think of! Personally, I hate Union of the Snake, but I should've remembered Planet Earth and even New Moon on Monday sounds better today than it did back in '84.
I absolutely hate The Reflex, though. God what a trainwreck of a single.

BTW, Spandau Ballet were hardly an awful band, and True is one hell of a Thin White Duke knock-off. One of the best British blue-eyed soul singles (and frankly, the best Culture Club singles -- which is to say anything from their first two albums -- were just as good).
PEW -- You sound awfully judgmental about bands that don't fit some preconceived ideology of yours. Is this what it means for you to be a "rockist?" At any rate, it makes you sound like a closed-minded ass when your idea of criticism is to say "oh this song reminds me of people I didn't like, so it sucks." That's a piss-poor excuse for a critical perspective.

The correct title is "Is There Something I Should Know?". Something I didn't know myself until I saw the title on the back of the CD. I too for many years thought it was "Please Please Tell Me Now". I have mixed feelings about the Reflex. I remember liking it the first few times I heard it, but unfortunately it got old really quick. Simon's "why-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay's" are what make the song kind of annoying. "Ordinary World". Indeed, a beautiful track.

Culture Club's debut album was excellent. And "Time (Clock Of The Heart)" is another song I could easily add to my list of 'perfect songs'.
My problem with Spandau's True album is that the songs just sound too similar to one another. I remember liking the album back then, but I find it difficult to listen to now [apart from the catchy singles]. 'Diamond' was a more diverse album and nowhere near as 'poppy' as True was. And "She Loved Like Diamond" is still my favourite Spandau song ever.

That's a piss-poor excuse for a critical perspective. That's because its not a critical perspective...its simply an honest reaction. One thing that you can't help but acknowledge when it comes to discussion of music is that music can evoke visceral gut reactions based on various associations. The music of the early 80s often evoke associations in ways that music prior to that never did. And that is because of music videos. Teen movies with "new wave" soundtracks also cause associations. As does people who were blatantly and obviously influenced by the music. For instance valley girls who wore neon colored leg warmers at shopping malls. And theres a reason for these associations. In the case of the valley girls, its because that was the target audiance for Duran Duran. Their videos and albums were marketed for that demographic.

And "She Loved Like Diamond" is still my favourite Spandau song ever. I wasn't really talking about that album, the the True single. Some bands are best appreciated in small doses, and that held true for a lot of New Romantic (which is a more fitting label than "New Wave" which had a lot of other connotations -- hell, there were articles back in the late seventies which called the Clash "New Wave") bands. And if all you're doing is going with your "gut reaction" to these songs/bands, then you're really worthless in terms of talking about what you like and why. You've got to be able to explain your tastes based upon the music, man, not just upon who you thought was cool at that point in time. Oh yeah, and those eighties John Hughes movies rocked, and had awesome soundtracks. OMD's "If You Leave" is another one of those perfect pop songs ... I get a little choked up just thinking about it ...

You've got to be able to explain your tastes based upon the music, man, not just upon who you thought was cool at that point in time. That would be true if that was all I was doing, but that not all that I am doing. In fact the defintion of a Rockist is someone who acknowledges the gut reaction, but then tries to go beyond that. But it IS important that you acknowledge that gut reaction, for there is something inside of each of us that is akin to a bullshit detector, that when upon hearing a terriblly weak song can immediatley identify it. Call it a quality (or lack of quality) detector. My Quality Detector immediatley flashes to the "Shit" settign nearly anytime a Duran Duran song comes on the radio.

Dude, why are you so concerned about labels in music? Is it seriously that important? Why can't you just like something without any consideration to what category it might fall under? I mean, it's like...I know you're a person, and I know you're retarded, but I don't worry about the labels that can consume you. I know you have a soul because you've said you can proove it. I'm just wanting to know why...why you're such a god damned retard, I guess. I mean, if you have a couple of extra chromosomes, then that's fine. I understand, and that kind of sucks. I mean, shit, you didn't choose that. But you're still so fucking retarded. And that I don't understand.
