I am in a noise collective that has been going on for years now. We usually do guerilla shows (show up at record stores, street corners, venue parking lots with battery powered things and just slay!) and wear masks, or bandanas to hide our identity.
I have always been fascinated with fringe music and the noise scene has really exploded over the years with the success of Thurston Moore, Load Records, Hella, Lightning Bolt, Black Dice, and Wolf Eyes. What do you guys think? Is is bullshit? Is it the last form of music to express things in a punk rock way by not being able to "play" an instrument? Is it not worth your time? Is the idea too arty or snobby?
Let me know because I'm a huge fan but I'm also curious as to what other people's reactions are.

I enjoy noise acts live...but not so much recorded, it's a very in the moment thing. We have a guy here who does a improvisional percussion peice that re-enacts the Passion Play. It's incredible. I know another guy who has lots of homemade noisemakers...white noise mostly and he's really good too. One guy does a set of sort of silly casio songs...but it's intentionally annoying, anyway he ends his set with the chorus from Don't Stop Beleivin' looped for about twelve minute. I swear to God it's genius. You go through stages...when it first starts you go "oh shit.." and then after a minute ir two it actually becomes fun, but after about five or six minutes it becomes painful and then when you hit the ten minute mark it's hilarious.

Is this the board where I talk about John Cale's Sun Blindness Music endlessly?

The first guy performs under the name Clang Quartet (he's also the former drummer for Geezer Lake for anyone who kept up with the Chapel Hill Scene in the 90's) the second is a guy named Chad Davis (who was also in Seven Foot Spleen/Torturcide/Subklinik and his new band Moutain Of Judgement just got signed and everyone who digs doom should look for that) the last guy is called Ca$hio...and I don't think he's ever performed outside of Hickory NC which is where I live. We actually have pretty good wierd art scene...we had Costes come through, look that up. I missed it and honestly I'm kinda glad I did.

Are you kidding?! You're area is sonic gold, man. You're looking at a kid here who was way into skateboarding, the bands Spatula, Shark Quest, Rockateens, Polvo and the like when I was a freshman in high school, thanks to the older seniors who gave me good music to listen to. That area has really cute girls, too. I have heard of Mountain of Judgement, which I am looking forward to hearing. They should be here during SXSW playing lots of free shows, since SXSW has a pretty much no noise or metal policy during it's festival. Most of them just come in and play free shows, which is cool, because they get to sell merch that hasn't been released yet. Side note: true story, if you play SXSW, you can't sell your stuff because it's considered a "promotional" festival and violates some sort of federal statute. That's also why up until last year, they didn't pay the bands.
Rocky, talk on all you want about that release, that is a good record.

Tomorrow night I'm working door for The Subliminator, he's worked with some of the Hawkwind guys, he does kind of a spoken word thing but with four theramins. Should be pretty good.

Never got into that pink noise like Maldoror and stuff. If I wanted shit like that I'll just amplify the tinnitus I'm suffering in my left ear.
Had a thing for early Current 9.3 back in the eighties though. Glenn Branca was ace too.

I've been working on getting a bunch of Noise shows here in town just to get some more things going here in Austin for this kind of music.
Have you guys heard Hair Police? Head some of that and Bastard Noise over the weekend and it was very engaging.

There are a ton of fun. I purchased the make your own kit and because it was a lot cheaper. Man, they are just really cool instruments. It always reminds me of that crazy singer from Melt Banana.

Dude, I just picked up the new Wolf Eyes single for their new album "Human Animal". Holy YIKES, it's like the Beatles of noise. The track is called "The Driller" and it is soo dark and good. It makes me fuzzy inside.
Anyone have any opinions round here about Black Dice?

I saw Black Dice open for GYBE!. They played one 35 minute piece. It was sort of cool at first, but it got to be too much by about the half way point.
