I'm just wary of the dude.......Circle Of Snakes had some decent tracks but I just miss the old band w/John Christ, et al. The older stuff promised on this new release at least will be interesting I'm sure.

I really like the first single, "Don't Stop Now". You can hear it at www.crowdedhouse.com . I can't wait for this album. Neil can do no wrong, and after the disappointment that was Chris Cornell's latest, I really need to hear something great again. Neil can do no wrong? Well, you were wrong. That new Crowded House album is pretty boring. It's every bit as dull as Cornell's latest. Probably because Steve Lillywhite produced both. Who woulda thought the man behind such legendary albums is also capable of producing such crap? In all fairness though, Lillywhite can't be blamed entirely. It's the songwriting on both albums that's mediocre. That, and the fact that they're both about 5 songs too long and have no real standout tracks. Blah!! I'm pissed at you both, you lazy, miserable, whining bastards. Even Velvet Revolver's new single is better than anything you guys have on your records.

So are you saying that I should listen to Macca's latest before I get around to loading up that Crowded House? And maybe I should wade through a Springsteen or Clash show in there as well?
I'm sad to hear that Neil isn't quite up to snuff on this one, but really after listening to the last Finn Brothers LP a few more times lately, I'm not too surprised. Oh well, at least there's still Tim's last (stellar) record to return to. "Astounding Moon" alone makes that one a keeper, and there's plenty more to love on it.

Macca's album will definitely be a more rewarding first listen. No question about it. I think the problem behind Crowded House's album is really that it was actually going to be Neil's solo album, until he got the idea to re-unite CH and had them overdub/re-record their parts. So it's ballad-heavy and depressing... which I can understand considering it's his first album after Paul Hester's passing. It would probably have made more sense as a solo album, but even as one, it would've been his worst. There are just no memorable hooks or melodies. There's nothing that even comes close to the classic CH. I'm not saying it's painful to listen to it or anything, the musicianship on it is great, it's just that the songs aren't really there. Of course, this is just my opinion. Give it a shot, a couple of other posters here seemed to like it. I don't want to deter you from giving it a chance. It's funny you should mention the last Finn Bros album too. It's like a slightly duller version of that. But even that record has a few real standouts, this one only has 2 songs that grab you right away, and oddly enough both feature Johnny Marr on them. Maybe he should dump Modest Mouse and join the Crowdies. They obviously work well together.

Ken, if you're in the mood to listen to something 'Finn', try that Before and After album of Tim's I YSI'd you a while back instead. It's pop music at it's finest.

So you guys are saying that I should put the new CH high on my list of "listen to this in the near future" then?

OK Ken, screw Macca, just put on that Crowded House album. If you find it every bit as enjoyable as any of their past albums, then yes, I am on crack. ftr, I don't think it's an awful record, up until track 7 it's an interesting listen, with a few spurts of genius. It's the ballad heavy second half of the record that puts me right to sleep. Still, musicianship and production are excellent... but melodies?? Hmmm.... a few. No Temple Of Men or Woodface here. "She Called Up" is probably the only song you'll remember after the first spin, even though there are a few songs better than that one. It's just that it's the song with the most memorable melody. The others require a bit of work... The bottom line is, as far as CH albums go, even the b-side/oddity collection Afterglow kicks Time On Earth's ass. Well, maybe not totally, but just a bit. I wish I was hearing the same album Drum and wayved are hearing, but unfortunately I'm not. No one would have loved to love this record more than myself, but after about 10 spins, I gotta say I'm just not feeling it.

I'm just wary of the dude....... Circle Of Snakes had some decent tracks but I just miss the old band w/John Christ, et al. The older stuff promised on this new release at least will be interesting I'm sure. They guy is ridiculous and his last few releases have not been all that great. In fact they've been pretty flat and some of the lyrics are just hilarious. The only reason why I am so excited is because it has a lot of stuff with John Christ. I know the dude won't do a Misfits reunion (thank god! I'm very happy about that actually) but it would be cool if he got John Christ, Eerie Von, and Chuck Biscuits (man, the names on this old punkers! ) back in the fold. I'd like to hear another record with that line up. I still jam "How The Gods Kill" alot.
