Eddie Vedder wouldn't stand a chance as a solo artist. Cornell may have made a shitty album, but there's no denying he's waaaay more talented than Vedder. Oh no he didn't! I'd agree with you if we're talking actual singing talent - Cornell has a set of pipes on him! I could see Vedder doing a quite acoustic and light percussion album - and all the die hard PJ fans would gobble it up, and would most likely out sell Chris Cornell. Fortunately, when Vedder wants to write a quite/slow/drony/reflective song he refuses to leave Pearl Jam's side. Personally I think Eddie Vedder also writes better lyrics than Cornell. Naturally, there is no way I can agree with your statement, less we're referring to singing ability. I even like Vedder's style of guitar playing better.

He'd be lost without his band backing him. Vedder hardly plays guitar and he's not much of a songwriter. How many PJ songs has he written the music to? "Porch"? "Wishlist"? Big whoop! They don't hold a candle to anything on Badmotorfinger, Superunknown or even Louder than Love. Then there's Euphoria Morning too. Cornell is way more talented in every respect. He's a natural. Vedder's just a surfer who got lucky with a good band.

Well, Vedder has a clunky style about the way he plays - think "Not For You" or "Lukin". Its far from technical, and even further from pretty, but there's a very honest feel to it, and that's was I like. It's loose, and raw, and just what I like. Even when he's playing by himself on quite numbers like "Sometimes" there's a sloppiness to it that I don't know it it's on purpose or lack of skill, but it works perfectly.
As for the lyrics, I personally relate to Vedder more than Cornell. Not much from the Soundgarden catalog really speaks to me. Pearl Jam however does. Songs like Rearviewmirrow, Life Wasted, Off He Goes, and In My Tree really move me. I don't think Chris Cornell is as sincere as Vedder. To me it comes across as though Vedder writes more from the heart, has more passion in him, more fire, more anger, more regrets. I don't really know how to explain it, but I think Vedder is better.
Vedder's just a surfer who got lucky with a good band.
This I agree w/ 100%, and I'd bet he does too.

Are we talkin' Vedder vs Cornell, here ?
Oh man, its Vedder hands down in every single category -- even tying his shoes. Eddie will beat Chris out every time.

except.... Cornell does have a one-of-a-kind, cigarette & whiskey stained voice which flows way smoother into the ear, I'll give him that much. But I think Eddie's passion outdoes Cornell's superior voice...

You're both wrong. We should have a poll for this, but I'm sure all you PJ fanatics will give the win to the overrated Vedder and that'll just piss me off. Oh, and I think Cornell is a better lyricist too. His lyrics may not be as direct and straightforward as Vedder's, but there's a sense of mystery to his words which Vedder's lack. Sometimes it's nice trying to decipher what one is saying. Sure enough, he's somewhat obsessed with singing about the sun, but aside from that minor flaw, there's really no competition between the two. The bottom line is Cornell is an immensely gifted artist, who just happened to make one shitty album.

aw, Kool :\
~
I will say this much: when I witnessed Audio*koff*slave @ Lollapalooza a few years back, w/APC - - - Not only did Audioslave steal the thunder away from every single other act including APC, but I'll be damned if Chris Cornell's voice wasn't the best god damned rock vocals I ever heard in my life, straight up. And during the show, a lightning storm broke out and acted as the most magnificent light show for a concert I ever witnessed, bar none. (It's hard to compete w/God, really).
And when Audioslave played SEVEN NATION ARMY - - - one of the highlights of my concertgoing career. It was tremendous

U know Kool - the more I think of that one performance, and Chris's utterly moving vocals - - that voice was about 1000% more beautiful to listen to than Eddie's screechy screaming jugular bulging hoarse shouting, so yeah, I'll hand it to you on the singer bit.
I was all bein' "defensive" about Vedder, cuz I just like the guy so much, and his band, and most of the songs PJ ever recorded, but after thinking about it, yeah, Cornell puts Vedder right into the dirt when it comes to being a singer.
It's like.. . . when he crooned into that mic w/that perfect rock'n' roll voice of his, it sent goosebumps across my arms, plus it was somehow soothing and just beautiful, as opposed to Vedder's, er... earnest screams. So, you're right man

I gotta say, I did like their intertwining vocals on Temple Of The Dog. "Hunger Strike" is just a fantastic song.

Damnit thoRns, you bailed on me!!! Nah, like I said earlier, Mr. Cornell sings better, I just relate to Vedder more. I'm listening to www.pearljamlive.com right now. The show I'm listening to is from this past tour (11/14/2006 - Australia). Anyway, right after "Even Flow" Vedder makes a cool comment about Soundgarden. During the song, Matt Cameron goes off on a crazy drum solo. After the song Vedder says something like - we're all big Soundgarden fans, they're one of the best bands of all time, and thank you Matt Cameron for making us so much god damned better. I thought that was kinda cool I still say Vedder has more passion than Cornell, and in my book, that goes a long way.

See what I mean? Even Vedder himself realizes he's no match for Cornell.

Every year I get a Christmas vinyl from Pearl Jam - In 2003 there's a live version of "Reach Down" - a Soundgarden song w/ Cornell on vocals! It's pretty cool b/c since Matt is PJ's drummer, it's the closest thing to a Soundgarden reunion you'll probably ever get. I love the fact that all those guys are still really tight w/ each other. The history between Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Pearl Jam is amazing to me. Anyway, that single is cool b/c it's Pearl Jam playing a Soundgarden song w/ Chris on vocals. If I can ever figure out how to convert my vinyl to a CD, I'll post it for you.

That sounds interesting Paul. I'll try and look for it myself online. I'm sure someone's uploaded it somewhere.
