Oh well, I couldn't fit The Libertines or TV On the Radio. Sorry 'bout that. My vote goes to Radiohead. Not even close, for me.

*sigh*, I guess it depends on what you mean by "best"

I voted for the White Stripes, but it was a very tough choice between the Stripes and Wilco. And pretty much all of my second tier picks are represented too. Good work with the choices, Melon, er, PinkZep.

I've got it narrowed down to either:
radiohead opeth tool mars volta pearl jam porcupine tree tom waits
~
And if Tom Waits is in the running - - so must Bob Dylan be. But neither of them are "bands" in the proper sense of the term. So I don't know if either should even be on the list.
~
So, If I am to choose between the abovementioned candidates, I would have to narrow down my strictures of what it means to be "best":
-ability to play instruments like a virtuoso?
Then the prize goes to either Opeth or Porcupine Tree, or the Mars Volta.
-overall having conquered the 90s and still going strong?
Then the prize goes to either Radiohead or Pearl jam.
-Sheer credibility for knocking each album out of the park whilst developing an unearthly force of fans no one could possibly match?
Then the prize must go to TOOL.
As you can see, I have good reason to ask "what do you mean by 'best'?"
I'm beginning to lean towards the Mars volta, I really am. . . .

I voted for Pearl Jam, seeing how Binaural, Riot Act, and Pearl Jam is the best consecutive three album series in their history.

I have to vote for Sigur Ros. No other band this decade has been able to bowl me over in the fashion these Icelanders have. Swooping between shoegazing, postrock and avantgarde it's an amazing overall soundscape, formed by incomparable vocals, violin-bow stroked guitar, piano, treated soundeffects and the ubiquitous glockenspiel. It's fairytalemusic for advanced listeners, drawing me in in a world not unlike a Jostein Gaardner-novel. Totally love it.
Porcupine Tree would have been up there too if it wasn't for the fact that I prefer their 90s output slightly over that of In Absentia and Deadwing. Steve Wilson certainly has uncloaked all his skills in the last few years, proving how effective a guitarist and arranger he is- the latter is certainly the case with his other band, the virtually unknown No-Man. For me PT is still the heir to the throne Pink Floyd recently vacated, using the ambience PF made their own in the seventies into a more progressive rock-influenced whole.
Most of the other bands don't cut the mustard for mine in this decade- Pearl Jam, U2, Tom Waits, Sonic Youth, RHCP, White Stripes, Radiohead and Tool not improving on 90s-output. Springsteen has been consistently strong, Dylan in a way too although Modern Times still hasn't convinced me of its masterpiece-status. Franz Ferdinand, Decemberists (The Crane Wife's a great album though!), Broken Social Scene, Neko Case and Animal Collective are OK but not groundbreaking. Opeth has the power to become the greatest band ever. I don't like Sleater-Kinney, Sufjan and the last 2 Wilco-albums. Radiohead and Johnny Cash deserve my utmost respect but are pipped here. All other bands mentioned- thanks for comin'.

Broken Social Scene. I can't think of any other band but them when talking about the 00s.

Usually I'd take anyone to task for talking trash about the boss, but I think everyone here would have to reasonably admit the oo's have not been his strongest decade.

I voted for Opeth. They were great in the 90s but they just got better this decade too.

Golly, thorny, a bit perfectionist there, aren't we?
FWIW, I meant to put Best Band/Artist Thus Far This Decade. At least everyone's pix are there. Yes,yes?

Riley and Luke haven't made it by here yet, so I figure at least another two votes for BSS are on the way.
