Re maarts' assessment(s) up above...that's what I wanna see!
Even while I still haven't found the right moment yet for Sigur Ros to blow me down the way they have for him. The wrong confluence of moons or something...so far.
This sort of description:
It's fairytalemusic for advanced listeners, drawing me in in a world not unlike a Jostein Gaardner-novel. Totally love it.
...makes me want to try (again) to get into them.
Here's what makes this place worth it. Sometimes a band can be a 'miss' on your likes/dislikes list, but then when you see someone you 'know' get so totally turned onto someone, you end up having to give them another couple of shots at winning you over.
Exceptional comments on Porcupine Tree and Opeth BTW....

Oddly enough, I didn't vote for Bruce. IMO nobody (so far) has just owned this decade. Wilco could have, but AGIB is a huge strike against them. Radiohead have spent too much time off to really get this award. U2 are past their peak, though still making worthwhile music. Pearl Jam have made two exceptional albums and a bunch of quality live shows, but Riot Act sucked. I don't have The Woods yet, so I feel kind of funny voting for Sleater-Kinney, though they certainly deserve a vote from someone. Tom Waits is stuck on repeat, and Dylan has released only two albums, one of which was brilliant and one of which still has me scratching my head.
I dunno ... voting for Bruce doesn't sound so silly when I list off everyone else's flaws. Bruce has made a brilliant album with the E Street Band, two killer tours with them (including a great live album from 2000), a perfectly good recording of traditional folk numbers that is the furthest he's pushed himself in thirty years musically, and a mediocre country/folk album that at least wasn't recorded in monotone (a la Tom Joad). Taken it total, I don't know if Bruce's output really is any worse than any of the other contenders.

Broken Social Scene are in the lead - and are another reason to go see Half Nelson. They are an important part of the score.

Another band that's put out consistantly above average albums (IMO) and continues to show alot of promise but didn't make the list is Death Cab For Cutie.

I like Death Cab, too. I'm not sure how many people around here do though.

I Like Death Cab. Moving to a major didn't really alter their approach too much, so I'm confident they've still got some solid music in them to get out.

Yeah, live those guys put on a very passionate show as well. I have to agree with that.

I like the Postal Service, but just can't get into Death Cab. I don't mind them here or there on the radio, but have a lot of trouble listening to anything twice in a row, which for me is a top requirement of a band that poppy.

I don't really like either of them. I can deal with Death Cab though. I think Postal Service suck bad though.

That's because you can't dance.

I can't, but that's not why I don't like them. It's because they make bad music.

Face it dude, not only can you not dance, but you can't see greatness either. Call your insurance company and see if you're covered for therapy, man. Get a grip.

I hate to sound like a little girl but the fact is I like just about everything Ben Gibbard's been involved in.
