Oddly enough, I was thinking earlier that the Cure had a real good claim to this title. They were active throughout the entire decade, and quite influential.
The influence thing tilts my personal preference more towards R.E.M. as well. They cast a big shadow on the US scene.
But the Cure sure do have a good case for this ... maybe I'll be able to decide tomorrow.

3 votes for Nelson now? Copycats. I voted for Nelson just for you, and this is the thanks I get? Hmph.

Can I create a new account so I can put in another vote for Nelson?

I don't know how to answer this poll because I'm not sure how to interpret it! Am I just supposed to vote for my favorite 80s artist, or for the artist who can most be said to have captured the zeitgeist of the 80s? Or something in between? Yeah, I didn't get that either. That's why I voted for Nelson. \m/

Going down that list (and thinking of the 80s generally) the Enossification factor is remarkably high. Reason enough there to go with Brian Eno.

I voted Sonic Youth. Their four album sequence of EVOL, Sister, Daydream Nation, and Dirty is, in my opinion, the strongest, most consistently good album sequence of the 80's.

If I hadn't voted for Nelson I would have voted for either Sonic Youth or the Pixies.

Figured they deserved to be boosted ahead of . . . Nelson.

oh, and might I suggest:
On the next poll, you might want to add the following choice:
-- I consider this poll a joke & refuse to take it seriously
Might as well, huh? I mean, who the fuck is "Nelson", anyway? ;P
