I saw the guy 'drum' last summer and he's way better than just ΒΌ of pretty much anyone, I'll tell ya. Even with electronic supplementation...

Me, I'd rather hear great players playing great songs than mediocre players playing great songs, but hey, whatever floats your boat. I certainly have no desire to impugn your love of mediocre musicians.
HERE's the real POTD. And he spelled impugn correctly!

And WhereTF is Dave Lombardo on this??

...and the fact that he back-pedalled from the 'insult' nature of this comment shows the man's got class too.

I was just scared of incurring his wrath. I mean, dude, I hear he has connections with Lucifer himself. The guy's pure evil, make no mistake about it.

Ok, www.stylusmagazine.com is doing the 50 greatest drummers of all time and I already hate their list and we're just with the first ten. Here we go: 50. Rat Scabies-The Damned 49. Damon Che-Don Cabellero 48. Janet Weiss-Sleater Kinney 47. Brian Chase-Yeah Yeah Yeahs 46. Billy Cobham 45. Lol Tolhurst / Boris Williams-The Cure 44. Grant Hart-Husker Du 43. Hal Blaine-Motown 42. Gary Young-Pavement 41. Ziggy Modeliste-The Meters Rat Scabies doesn't do it for me at all. I like The Damned but blah on putting him in the top 50. Even though Damon Che is such an asshole, which too bad this isn't an asshole contest since he'd get first, he should be in the top 20. Janet Weiss should place much higher in my opinion. I think she should place higher as well. Lol Tolhurst is a terrible drummer and to put him in there with Boris Williams is just bullshit. Fuck Gary Young.

Yeah, Gary Young was awful. Weiss is incredible.

Having seen Billy Cobham play this year I think he should be in the top 5. None of these modern drummers have the same kind of technique as he has and he is placed lower than the staccato-drummer from The Cure?
Stylless Magazine more likely....

That's exactly what I thought. I can't believe that they would rate Lol (who is now known as laugh out loud, and while I like early Cure, the drums are shit on those recordings) Tolhurst above the great Billy Colburn.

40. Mik Glaisher-? 39. Tony Allen-Fela Kuti (should rate a little higher as well) 38. Igor Cavalera-Sepultura (should be in the top ten if you ask me) 37. Jeremiah Green-Modest Mouse (he's okay) 36. John Densmore-The Doors (Say what you will about the Doors, home due could play a mean kit) 35. Hugo Burnham-Gang of Four 34. Zach Hill-Hella 33. Steve Shelley-Sonic Youth 32. Reni-Stone Roses 31. Jim Eno-Spoon
Ok.....rating Jeremiah Green and Steve Shelly above Igor is just NONSENSE!!!
Zach Hill is a bad ass though, he definitely belongs on the list. The guy from Spoon, which is a band I do like, is just boring.
As a drummer I'm a bit offended.

For many of those picks, they seem to be choosing drummers of bands they like, instead of drummers that they geuninely think are good.

Hey, I gotta wave my little Aussie flag and say Rob Hirst of Midnight Oil fame should be on that list - I saw them play at least 4 - 5 times and each time that guy literally POUNDED the living bejesus on those skins, broke god knows how many sticks and rarely if ever missed a beat - he's a powerhouse and totally overlooked. He honestly is the backbone to the hard uncompromising sound of the Oils best stuff...

Sepultura is freaking awesome! Their drummer is freakin' insane. One of my friends has some Sepultura on wax - We go over to his house sometimes hang out, play pool, and listen to vinyl - he has an impressive collection.
Anyway, this is the same guy who's in that band Gist I mention around here sometimes. They have a song called 'Concrete Faults' and they give a nod to Sepultura on the song. I think you can listen on itunes, or on Gist's myspace page.
Having said that though, I really do like Steve Shelley- Every SY record he impresses.
Oh, and I agree w/ you about Densmore from the Doors. Then again, I'm one of the few around here who likes the Doors.

30. Clyde Stubblefield-James Brown 29. Brendan Canty-Fugazi 28. Al Jackson Jr-Stax 27. Yoshi P We-Boredoms 26. Ringo Starr 25. Levon Helm-The Band 24. Jimmy Chamberlin-Shitting Pumpkins 23. Bill Bruford-Yes, King Crimson 22. Neil Peart-Rush 21. Larry Mullen Jr-U2 20. Bill Berry-REM 19. Joe Easley 18. Mitch Mitchell 17. Bill Ward-Black Sabbath 16. Ginger Baker-Cream 15. Klaus Dinger-Neu 14. Glen Kotche-Wilco, Jim O'Rourke 13. Tony Thompson 12. Chris Frantz-Talking Heads 11. Dave Lombardo-Slayer So......the list is continueing to confuse me. There is no way that that fucking hack in UBlew is better than Neil Peart, Jimmy Chamberlin or Bill Bruford. Good lord is that just a mulligan. Also, Bill Berry? Ok, he laid down a good back beat but good lord, rating that guy that high is a little much. Bill Ward being rated so high is a little confusing to me as well. Argh! This list is infuriating.
