Ok, I've been listening to a lot Bowie today and that guy's put out a lot of crap. Maybe "crap" is a little strong but I thought I liked more of his stuff more then I do. A lot of it is just boring and schmaltsy. The only albums I can really say I like as a whole is the early 70's stuff and the last three or four, in between is spotty. I just thought there were more honestly great moments, instead the majority of his career has been merely enjoyable...and at times crap. Ya know, I love Bowie, but "schmaltzy" is exactly the right adjective to describe how he goes awry when he does go awry. There are moments in his catalogs that make me cringe, and I could never quite put my finger on what it was about these moments that were so bothersome, but now I know - the problem is that they're all hyper-schmaltzy. Now, the guy has released enough masterpieces that I can forgive him, but when he's schmaltzy, it's BAD. Cheers, M

Ever spent any time with theatre people? It's the cabaret thing.

You're right, and the reason I know this, is because there was a time (call it "1987") when I listened to and actually liked NEVER LET ME DOWN.

Hey just cuz ya don't like the beat of my drum day in day out doesn't mean you'll never let me down, I thought you were my shining star but you're too dizzy & makin my love cry for '87 when new york was in love w/the glass spider and zeroes were all the rage. And now you're tellin me time has crawled to this -? A bunch of uppity posers who think bowie's homage to post-disco/soul wasn't "bang bang" enuff to suit -- what exactly -?- some notion of how DAVID BOWIE should play his music? *pshaw* Dig that album up again and blow off the dust & I think you'll find that bassline in the title track to be one catchy riff, and besides, MIckey friggin Roarke RAPS on that Smokey Robinson tribute, what's not to like?

MIckey friggin Roarke RAPS on that Smokey Robinson tribute, what's not to like? I think this is one thing definitely not to like.

Ya know, I couldn't sum up the flaws in this record anywhere near this eloquently. Bowie has made some sketchy albums, but this one really is highlight free. In it's utter lack of redeeming features, it is matched only by the absolutely pointless Tin Machine II, which at least is good for clearing a room or keeping prisoners from sleeping.
