I agree actually but I'd still rather listen to Clapton.

I like a lot of the stuff Clapton did in the '60s and early '70s, but my god, he's been terrible since then. I actually saw him live a while back (when he was promoting whatever album it was that had "My Father's Eyes"). The meat of the show was good, but he opened with six straight new songs before going into the classics, and then the bastard played the acoustic version of "Layla". Fuck that. I want to hear some fucking electric guitar on that song. Oh, and also, he had the other guitarist in his band taking half the solos. What the hell?
Anyway, Lou Reed has released at least a half dozen good albums since Clapton last released a good one, and Lou can still rock the live show too.

Yeah, the sixties to mid seventies Clapton is the good Clapton.

I'm still a little skeptical about him actually being God at that point though.

'Berlin' is a dark pop masterpiece. That's what your are SUPPOSED to think if you want to have Hipster cred. But come on. It's terrible. You will be hard pressed to find too many bigger Lou Reed fan than me, but I'm not going to say I like something that's horse crap just out of blind loyalty to him. Here's two questions: WHen is the last time you actually sat through the entire album? Other than MMM what Lou Reed album(s) would you say is worst than this one? I sat through a live performance of 'Berlin'. It was brilliant. Anyway, I don't give a shit about what I'm supposed to think or not supposed to think, so I could really give two flying fucks about my hipster cred. I don't need hipster cred. I have awesome boobs. Thats an international currency accepted everywhere. Thanks.

Maybe the live performance was better than the record, i don't know. But I find it unlistenable. Especially that part with the crying baby. Jesus Christ! I get enough of that from my son, why the hell would I want to listen to it on a record?!?

Well, my ovaries are currently holidaying in Cuba, so I need my wailing baby fix & Lou Reed gives it to me.
fwiw, yeah, I actually think its a perfectly constructed album.
I'm not offended if you don't like it. The only album you are not allowed to argue with me about is Sandinista!, b/c I've declared it perfect & 100% relevant.

I prefer Combat Rock--which is a very unpopular thing to say, I know--but yeah, Sandinista is quality as well. Just out of curiousity, besides the wailing baby, what is it you like about Berlin? And when and where did you see the live performance? And what was it like?

I was just kidding. I don't even know who Lou Reed is. Isn't Berlin a country?

I was just kidding. I don't even know who Lou Reed is. Isn't Berlin a country? It's a city in Germany. I'd really be interested in hearing about the Berlin performance you saw? Personally, besides the songs being boring, I have a pretty long list of what I dont like out Berlin. ~I think it tries too hard to jump on the 'concept album' bandwagon that was out of control in the early 70s. ~I find the story line melodramtic and contrived. ~I find Bob Ezrin's production to be overblown to ad nasuem, overloaded instruments with no other purpsoe than simply for the sake of having layers of uninspired noise ~And Reed was waaay out of his element (his element being the two-guitars/bass/drums set-up that he worked within for most of the rest of his career) which is fine if it works, or if he learnt something from it and it helped his music evolve. But the actual music of Berlin suffers because of it.

OK, this whole Lou Reed/Berlin etc. convo needs to go somewhere else now. If it's not a Bowie album, it doesn't belong here. Move along ... move along ... And just some gratuitous Bowie pics: The Thin White Ziggy in Rock. Plaza (NYC) a few years back: Fame: Ziggy Stardust (1973, Scotland)

Berlin would probably be better if Bowie covered it.

I saw Lou Reed live back in 95. He was booooooring. The only reason I went to that concert was because he was supporting Bowie, who was sensational.
Elvis Costello was the opening act at that festival. He was great, and I wasn't even a fan at the time. I'm still not crazy about him, but he was great live.

Berlin would probably be better if Bowie covered it. This is almost always true.
