This is going to be a high five to some of the most underrated metal albums of all time. I expect Thorn and a few to debate me pretty hard on this, but I really think this will be fun to dissect. I've been listening to a lot of metal here recently. This is mostly going to be a list of bands that have really influenced the newer scene or newer bands that I think will have a major impact 10 years from now. This is the first five.
20.
Today is the Day-"In The Eyes of God"
This the beginning of 2 future members of Mastodon starting their reign over the decade as the kings of the metal scene. Brann shows that he can destroy most drummers in 15 minutes and that Steve Austin has a honest depravity in it's lyrical subject matter that would make Trent Reznor groan in jealous glee. One of the most technical metal records I have ever heard and brutal.
19.
Deadguy-"Fixation On A Coworker"
These guys were a big deal when I was just starting college. They were metal at a time when it really wasn't that cool and in my opinion, Coalesce and Converge owe much of their career to this release. Pantera meets old school Celtic Frost with some punishing lyrics.
18.
Xashthur-"Subliminal Genocide"
One guy who proves that the American Black Metal scene is just as healthy as the European scene. Fantastic album with a lo-fi sound that evokes some guy recording it in a cold cave at Yellowstone National Park and prefers bats to humans.
17.
Jesu-"Jesu"
Justin Broadrick, former member of the first line up of Napalm Death and leader of Godflesh, releases an album of raging beauty. Imagine if Varg from Burzum lost the racist ideology and finds My Bloody Valentine. Heavy, brutal, and scary but also has moments of etheral beauty that not enough bands in the genre embrace.
16.
Floor-"Dove"
A band that was able to successfully marry Helmet with the more doom-y aspects of artier metal like Neurosis. Members of Floor have gone on to form the band Torche, which is just brutal. I saw them live and it was amazing. Never the less, if you want to know what it would sound like if Page Hamilton fronted Sleep, here you go.
