Seeing all the attention that YSIs are getting around here, I'm compelled to set up a thread for all things bittorrent. For those that don't use the bittorrent format, it is a vastly superior means of transfering files at high speeds. It runs on a data transfer protocol similar to the heydey of Kazaa and Morpheus: multiple download sources for the same file, so that you can get the fastest speed possible. But in particular, I have 10 invites for the king of all music torrent sites, OiNK's Pink Palace. The average download speeds off OiNK torrents range between 500kps to a full MB per second, which means you can have a full album in about 3 minutes. The sound quality and reliability is off the charts due to rigorous moderation and torrent screening. They have all the new releases in high quality sooner than pretty much any other location (soulseek, etc.). If anyone is interested in gaining access to this treasure trove, or just learning about bittorrent and what it's all about, this shall be the place to get it

Oh yes! Definitely, set me up with an Oink invite! I've wanted one for ages now...

Kool, do you know how to maintain a good ratio on a torrent site? I just want to know if you know how to hold your own, because if you're kicked off OiNK, I can't invite you back

I suppose downloading something popular and constantly seeding it. I don't know how Oink works. What do you do to maintain a good ratio?

I only use bittorrent for music, movies etc., but it's mostly from public sites. Unless I'm downloading you know what... And those require seeding, which I do. I got good ratios at a couple of sites. Probably because my computer is on almost 24/7. I'm just not sure how Oink works.

There are two ways of doing that.
1, you can upload new content. There's a whole set of things pertaining to that that can be pretty arcane, so if you want to go that way, I'd have to help you specifically on it.
2, the easier way is to just leave what you download up for an indefinite amount of time until you've uploaded about 150% of what the file size is, or a 1.5 ratio. This means you can't alter, change, rename or move the files/folders you download. So you either have to set up a 'downloaded torrent' folder or save each album to the destination folder you want (like, let's say, "C:\My Music\Rock\Bruce Springsteen\Born to Run" or similar, vs. the all purpose "C:\download\OiNK Torrents"). You could also copy what you download and alter the copy as you will, leaving the original as your seeding copy to be deleted upon proper ratio fufillment, which is what I'm doing now, but that takes up twice the space.
I do option #2 and I maintained a 2.00+ ratio for over a year. I've gone on a serious download binge over the last month and I'm still at 1.6 ratio even after 40 gigs of new downloads.
Do you currently use a bittorrent client and know your way around all that stuff?

If you just maintain a healthy ratio, you should be fine. If you leave your BT on 24/7 like you said, and have no upload caps, like if you were on a router, you should be more than fine.
PM me your email so I can invite you, and I can walk you through it. I suggest starting off slow in the first few weeks and see how your internet responds to uploading/downloading so you know the particular paramaters that you're limited to.

I usually use utorrent, but if I'm downloading overnight I use azureus, which seems to be faster. But it's a memory hog so I don't use it when I'm also using my computer because it slows down everything.

Good, those are the two I use (although I rarely use Azureus anymore). You sound like you know BT pretty well at least, so at this point all I need to help you with is the stick-up-their-asses rules OiNK is so infamous for, and how to deal with them. First thing is, never visit the forums. They are seriously jaded assholes over there who won't help you because they've only answered the same questions 500 times before. If you have any questions, PM me here.

OK. I avoid forums anyway. This is the only place where I post anything. btw, got the invite. Thanks! If I get stuck anywhere I'll let you know.

The Oink rules are fucking insane. I recognize that that's a big reason why they've managed to become the most desirable torrent site, but seriously, they're a bunch of fucking Nazis.

This is true. But just maintain a good ratio and don't even bother uploading, and you'll be fine. The biggest obstacle for OiNK is upload caps. The router I'm on doesn't allow for over 40kbs upload yet I can top out at 500kbs download. I have to keep this thing on all day to even HOPE to break even, but I manage...

I don't think I'll have that problem. My downloads rarely top out at 100kbs (uploads 25kbps), but that's probably why my ratios are usually fine.

Oink me.
What's the ratio cutoff?

You have to keep around a 1.0...though I've been around .97 for several months now, so they don't seem to be a strict as they used to be. I think the key to keep torrents open as much as possible even if no one's downloading. I always have 5-6 torrents open overnight and usually during the day while I'm at work. I've never had a huge ratio but I don't download a ton from them either.
