Great! Thanks Ken. I see Stevie is being sucked up nicely. Looks like you'll get about 3 GB back from that, just this weekend alone. Leave it up for a while, I think you could get more than twice that back in a week or so. I'm telling ya, Stevie's hot over there.

Ken, I haven't forgotten about the Split Enz uploads. I'll be putting them up this week for sure. I'd get started on it now, but someone is sucking on my melon[camp] file again, and since I'm the only seeder, I'll be getting a full GB from it, once again! I'm afraid that if I cut him off, he'll cancel the download so I don't wanna risk it..

No worries mate -- I've got so much stuff to sort through right now that I won't notice they're not up anyway!

Well, some time in the wee hours of the morning, I uploaded enough Miles Davis to put me over the much heralded 1.00 ratio. I am now a power user plus at oink. And have almost completely filled my hard drive.

Congratulations Ken on the Power User status. That's pretty remarkable going from ratio watch to power user in a little over a week. I totally understand your hard drive issues, since I'm experiencing them myself. I think it's time I started deleting my first flac uploads.

Thanks, Kool. A big part of it was getting my software/wireless network properly configured so that I could be "clever" and then having the time (and disc space) to seed some stuff. That Stevie set is still getting me mileage, so I'm leaving it alone for now (in fact, two of the discs are being accessed right now). I also made some smart choices with what I d/l'ded -- getting things that had just been posted before there were many (any) other seeders really helped -- I've gotten more than a half gig surplus from that Phil Spector box set I snagged last week! I did do quite a turn-around in a very short time -- but to have access to so much music is just too much to pass up. If I didn't get my ratio up, I'd have to turn in my music geek card. (You all do have your music geek cards, right?).

Ken, keep seeding Stevie for as long as you can. That set is a goldmine. Stop seeding anything but those. Milk them for all you can. I think you'll eventually get 6-7 GB from those alone. Maybe even more if you're lucky and your snatchers stop seeding them and leave you all alone to the 'dirty work'.

Yeah, those Wonder discs are getting some mileage, and also that Phil Spector box (there are only three people seeding it, I've uploaded over 700 mb, and it was only a 200 or so mb d/l) and this Springsteen '99 show [FLAC] where I'm the only one seeding it. That baby is almost a gig, and every so often someone comes along and gets it ... like what's happening right now.
I want to get my ratio up high enough so that I don't even have to think about it, so I'm trying to leave as many things going as possible now. But when I look at my B/T client and it's quiet, I get a little sad/pissed off. I just want that thing to be sharing all the time.
Oh yeah, anyone out there want to try OiNK out? I've got four invites sitting on the shelf, as it were. If you've got questions about how it works, ask Kool, Fuzznuts, or Shin, as they're more conversant with it than I. But I've got no one in mind for these things, if anyone's interested let me know.

I got 4 invites too. I sent one out last week but that dude that got it seems to be scared of screwing up his ratio and has only downloaded a few albums. The other day, I got another invite so now I'm back to 4. I know of another couple of people who'd love oink, but don't have highspeed internet connections and are totally unfamiliar with how bittorrent works. Bowiglou should really get into this, he'd have a blast. And with all those vinyl rips he's got sitting on his hard drive, he'd have more than enough things to upload.

I was thinking of Bow, too. I'm not sure if he'd be comfortable with the techie stuff necessary to get his PC seeding properly (the whole "clever" thing), but otherwise I think he'd love it.

I had no problem with that. I was "clever" from the get-go. I don't understand why others aren't. Maybe it's an Azureus issue (I use utorrent). I think Bow's problem is that he's afraid of downloading "stolen" music. He more or less said so a while back. Although I don't think there's a problem with OiNK.., being a private site and all. If anyone will be targeted, it'll be the people running the place, not its 150,000 members.

The "clever" thing has to do with whether you have a static or dynamic IP address. It took me a little while to find out how to make mine static (broadband web providers here market dynamic IP addressing as being a big safety benefit, and with some services it costs more to get a static address, though you can essentially make a dynamic address static via software settings, which is what I had to do).
On the whole "stolen music" thing ... I know that technically it is. But I'm not strong enough to say "no" to all the goodies out there. And some of the stuff (live shows, etc.) isn't really in violation of any copyright, and it's hard to find anywhere else.

Yeah, Ken, I think I remember a while back you had moral objections to file sharing, but it's nice to see you've seen the light.

I thought I'd bump this thread since the Springsteen thread is for all things Bruce.
Anyway, Ken, I noticed that some people over at oink have uploaded Bowie's remasters as "24 bit remastered series". Do you by any chance know if these are the Ryko re-issues you were talking about? Is there some sticker on your Rykodiscs that say the same thing?

The 24 bit ones are the Virgin issues, I believe. Ryko's aren't as technically sophisticated, but they sound better, at least to my ears. And some of the extra tracks are nothing short of amazing. I've got Ziggy, Alladin Sane, Station to Station, Low and Scary Monsters on Ryko issues.
I'll check to see if those are up at Oink ... if not, I'll try to upload 'em this weekend or so.
