gawd, I'm sorely tempted.....I was just having a ball gettng the stuff on the YSI board, but once the RIAA got involved in my Kazaa-Lite days, I did reluctantly retire from file-sharing (AKA: online piracy)..........but geez, it sounds like there is a wealth of material on this boink torrent network-thingy-majob I was thinking of Bow, too. I'm not sure if he'd be comfortable with the techie stuff necessary to get his PC seeding properly (the whole "clever" thing), but otherwise I think he'd love it.

I just noticed 2 of my Bowie albums [Ziggy stardust & Hunky Dory] have the "24 bit remastered" sticker on them. Both released in 1999 by EMI. I also have an older copy of The Man who Sold The World from 1990 which has no sticker on it, but it does feature a few bonus tracks. I suppose it's the same as the Rykodisc versions you're talking about... although that too was distributed by EMI. Maybe only US releases were 'Ryko'.

Bow, take the plunge. I'm sure OiNK is safe. First of all, it's based in the UK. Secondly, it's a private tracker, so if anyone will be targeted it'll be Mr. OiNK. It's really just a small community consisting of people exchanging their music, so I think in the eyes of the law, they're covered. Besides, from what I hear, not a single person has ever been prosecuted for downloading music in the US. Go for it dude, you'll never look back.

It could have been only on Ryko in the US, but if you've got Bowie w/bonus tracks, those are the "Ryko" issues, and are the ones to have. I've got that Man Who Sold the World, too. Forgot that one in my earlier listing. It's got some of the most dispensible extras -- historically interesting demos, but nothing that I play a lot. Ziggy has two tracks -- "Velvet Goldmine" and "Sweet Head" -- which could easily have been singles or album cuts, and yet another version of "John I'm Only Dancing." Oh yeah, I've also got Lodger as a Ryko pressing.
The best bonus tracks are for Scary Monsters, where Bowie reworked "Space Oddity" and "Panic In Detroit" into cuts that sounded like they belonged on that album, and Station to Station, which features absolutely smoking versions of "Stay" and "Word on a Wing," the latter of which is my favorite version of that track. Those cuts are simply essential, IMO. The extras on Low are fine as well -- about what you'd expect for that record. I don't know what Ryko had on "Heroes," as I've never had that one. It's sort of my Bowie "holy grail" now that (courtesy of Bowiglou) I've got the Buddha of Suburbia.
Bow -- I think you'd love Oink, once you get over your initial filesharing reservations. This is by far the best way to check out music that I've ever come across. It's soooo much better (and more reliable) than other venues like Limewire that I'd checked out in the past. If you want to give it a shot, I'd be happy to send you an invite (I've got like 8 of them sitting over there), and if nothing else you can download a few gigs of music and leave.

Lightning Frightening Holy Holy Moonage Daydream Hang On To Yourself
Are these your bonus tracks too from TMWSTW? If so, then I think we're talking about the same versions of the album. If I recall correctly, they're all demos/early versions too. I rarely listen to them myself.

thank you ken..are there any of the problems with Spyware that Kazaa-lite and other file-sharing platforms had? None that I'm aware of Bow. Of course, I'm using a Mac and that renders 99.99% of such nastiness irrelevant to me. But the folks who run Oink (and hence everyone who winds up remaining as a member there, as they do have standards and those are enforced) place a premium on having only clean files. They even have a rule of no audience recordings for live shows, though I've d/l'ded a few that didn't comply with that axiom. (However, getting to hear the Clash from '76 (with Keith Levine on "phantom" guitar) and '77, well, who cares about fidelity there!)
Oink is free from trolls and (as far as I can tell) from spyware, viruses, etc. I've had a couple of FLAC downloads that I was unable to convert to other formats, but that has more to do with my limited understanding and use of the appropriate software, I think, rather than nefarious doings by the original seeder(s).
And last night, I helped myself to most of the Kinks katalog, so that I can (finally) properly go through it all. I know that (eventually) I'll wind up with a bunch of these on disc, and if I didn't "procure" them this way, I'm still not in a position to go out and buy them all today anyway.
All in all, if I really like something, I want to own it on CD -- at least for a while. I may decide to trade it in at some point and keep my mp3 copy, but is that really (much) different from getting rid of an LP in favor of a cassette copy? I can rationalize what I'm doing so that it doesn't feel like blatent theft to me ... but in the end, I just can't resist having thousands and thousands of titles, many of which have never been officially released, available via a couple of mouseclicks. Forgive me for I have surrendered to temptation ... but it feels so good!
In the immortal words of Jerry Lee Lewis (who I now have a killer "best of" from via Oink) ...
Great balls of fire!

Ken, you should send Bow an invite just so he can get a taster of what's available there before he finally takes the plunge and starts downloading. I think bow's a Mac guy too, so if anyone should show him how it works, it's you. I use utorrent as my BT client, which I don't think works with Macs. And no, there's no spyware with bittorrent technology or any type of audio file. Bow's gonna have a ball with OiNK.

Bow, watch your email for your OiNK invite. Check the place out, ask any questions you may have and we'll be happy to try to assist. You will need a (free) bittorrent client, and there are lots of those out there (Kool uses utorrent for his PC, and I've got Azureus for my Macs). And (believe me) you'll need more hard drive space. I'm up to something like seventy something gigabytes of music files now. I really need to get me an external terabyte drive one of these days.

Yeah, I got a bunch of them actually. Maarts, PM your email and and I'll send you an invite. Even if you decide to not download anything, you can still browse around and see what's available there.
