I have no clue why I didn't set this one up a long time ago. To me, Wish You Were Here is better than any album by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, U2, Led Zeppelin or anyone else. And it comes in a distant 2nd to Dark Side Of the Moon. Who else in rock music marries one song to the next song as skillfully as Floyd? Who?

Pipers is the only essential Pink Floyd album. The rest are pretty much basic ProgRock fodder...Wish You Were Here is a distant second, then Dark Side...

If you want to know why, read a blog.

Piper is really the only Floyd album worth owning. Syd Barrett was obviously a genius. Even after he left the group, he was still the motivation for some of their better songs. Wish You Were Here is obviously about Syd, Parts of the Wall are obviously about Syd or inspired by Syd. In fact every Floyd album throughout the 70s was Syd-influenced. That's how large his genius was. It reach across the years and he is one of the biggest influences in Rock--period. His face belongs on Mount Rockmore.

Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is garbage. As strictly "trollbait", this is a classic line, & deserves a winky chortle. But if it's an honest opinion -- imo it is seriously out of touch, all the more surprising coming from ded, who I consider very much IN touch w/popular music history.

I voted for the "The Final Cut" for personal reasons, but I really love that album. "Animals" was a close second.

I happen to be that rare Floyd fan whose devotion to the band is split equitably between the original Roger (Roger "Syd" Barrett), the successor to that throne (George "Roger" Waters), and the heart & soul of the band's exquisite eventual signature-guitar sound, David Gilmour. A perfect Trinity to have helmed the greatest band the world ever knew, Amen.

I voted for ANIMALS, skvor. It really comes down to an impossible vote, as I believe Floyd's canon entire is of unequivocal finesse, each for its own particular reasons. For example, I honestly could not pick their "best" out of these:
~Piper At The Gates Of Dawn ~Meddle ~Dark Side Of The Moon ~Animals ~Wish You Were Here ~The Wall ~The Final Cut
All 7 come in to tie for "First Place" as far as I'm concerned, each w/their own merits to support that.
I chose ANIMALS because there is something about it that goes beyond a lot of their other stuff, both lyrically and musically. What is it - Just 4 songs (well, 5 -- if you consider the 2 part "Pigs On The Wing" as seperate, which they aren't, really) -- which add up to an extremely powerful musical as well as lyrical statement. It deserves recognition, and although I can't say it's really "better" than WYWH or DSOTM for instance, I believe that due to it's searing, painful honesty and anger, and simply jaw-dropping musical passages ("Dogs" and "Sheep", in particular. . . aw fuckit, the whole damn thing is untouchable!), I have to relent and give it mad props.

I'd love to tell you I was joking but I can't. I really hate that album...I hate everything I've heard from Syd Barrett. Not just kinda dislike either, I think it's really terrible. Psychadelia is so not my thing.

I can take psychedelics in small amounts, like in "The Who Sell Out". But that's about it.
