Finally re-acquired this on vinyl the other day, and listening to it (for the millionth time no less) was a revelation. I always come back to this one as my "favorite" PF, and hearing its music pour out of my quad speakers the other day once again proved why. It also got me thinking, man, who says Pink Floyd is NOT "prog" -? Fuck, PInk Floyd is the MOTHER of all prog bands! Seriously, I kinda recall there being some sentiment around here that Floyd shouldn't even be considered "prog", and although that's fine w/me, as labels really do suck - who wants em -?- certainly not Floyd themselves I'd wager. But on the other hand, these fuckers were composing and playing twenty-minute song cycles that took up entire sides of an album (Atom Heart Mother, Meddle) and after DSOTM (just one of the most progressive albums ever recorded) they really began expanding their prog tendencies and going into hyperdrive with it. The 9 - part "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" - ? *Hello, McFlies*, Pink Floyd created Prog ! I'll concede they weren't alone in so doing (well duh, progeny isn't created from scratch, it takes more than one to tango), I mean we've got the likes of King Crimson, YES, Genesis, and a small host of other bands on both sides of the globe working towards contributing their genetics to what would later be labelled as "prog", but Pink Floyd, if not the Midwives of prog themselves, seem to me increasingly to be the Mother of it all ! In short, I am fine with refusing to label the Floyd as strictly "prog", (what with prog's noodly wankery and hyper-overdrive song cycling), but listening to ANIMALS the other day was just amazing. By that time -- 1977 -- this band was fully immersed in the waters of progressive music, and had repeatedly proven themselves to be the apotheosis of that genre. Just look at PORCUPINE TREE, for instance. You won't find anyone refuting their prog status - - and need I remind you that Porcupine Tree started out as nothing more than a Pink Floyd copycat band ? Steve Wilson literally appropriated actual Floyd riffs and Gilmourian guitar techniques on their early albums. I recall a song from "Stars Die" (an early comp) whose guitar -riff is lifted straight out of the "Another Brick In The Wall" school of riffin. In any case, may the words "Pink Floyd" never be neglected from any real in depth discussion about prog. If it wasn't for the Floyd - the state of prog today would not even exist as it does. *There would not even BE a Porcupine Tree* ...
