I love ...And Justice, it's just not better then Puppets. Kill 'em All - 4 1/2 Ride - 5 Puppets - 5* Garage Days - 4 1/2 Justice - 5 Black - 4 Load - 3 Reload - 2 1/2 St. Anger - 1 That's pretty accurate I say. Although I'd switch the Load-Reload ratings around and maybe knock off half a star from the Black album and Garage Days. Other than that, I totally agree with you.

Ride the Lightning, motherfuckers. Conventional wisdom is sooooo wrong on this one. Master of Puppets is good and all, but Ride the Lightning is epic. For Whom the Bell Tolls = best song Metallica ever wrote.

The highs are real fucking high on Ride but it's got a couple weak tracks...Escape is pretty unremarkable, but Puppets is flawless start to finish. Justice also doesn't have weak track track on it but it's production holds it back. Think of how awesome it is, now think of how awesome it would if it had been produced like Ride or Puppets.

I disagree. There's no weak track on either Master.. or Ride... but the latter is still better because it represents a step-up in the band's songwriting from their first album; as if there's a great sense of discovery about the whole mess. Master of Puppets fine-tunes and continues the creative streak but doesn't really build or improve on it to my ears. That's not necessarily a misstep: the band just had the sense to not fuck with what worked best previously.
My album rankings (whether a damn is given or not): 1. Ride The Lightning 2. Master of Puppets 3. Kill 'Em All 4. ...And Justice for All 5. Garage, Inc. 6. Metallica 7. Load 8. St. Anger 9. Re-Load

I'm pretty sure myself, Pissin and someone else here are the only ones that champion the album at all, at any rate. So yes, we do exist. ;D

Is it really "championing" an album to say that it's the second worst record they did?!

Is it really "championing" an album to say that it's the second worst record they did?! I should've added a disclaimer to that list: while I think the Load albums and St. Anger are the least of their albums, I don't think they're terrible. Only ReLoad shares the distinction of myself hardly revisiting it and considering it terrible. I think there is value in Load and St. Anger but they still pale in comparison to all those higher on the list.

It's not easy for bands who have had such success to call it a day. Most are in denial when they begin to suck. Or they just carry on milking past glories. Or both. What you said about the creative lifespan is totally true. I can't think of anyone who's maintained it for over a decade. *koff* /Pearl Jam /*end koff*
