I've edited my original post to incorporate all the bands that have been mentioned so far (except Blind Melon and Smashing Pumpkins, neither of whom satisfy the "current" requirement). The Smashing Pumpkins are putting out an album this year. Yeah, but we can't really make any judgments on what they're like currently until we hear it.

Oh, I'm expecting it to be garbage. I was just being nitpicky.

Illinois - Wilco. Neko Case is based here too though. This is a hard choice She could work for Virginia as well. Minnesota - The Replacements North Dakota - Lawrence Welk

Illinois - Wilco. Neko Case is based here too though. This is a hard choice She could work for Virginia as well. Minnesota - The Replacements North Dakota - Lawrence Welk She was born in Virginia, got her start in Washington/British Columbia and is now based here. I am assuming that since Ryosuke has emphasized current output, that it's best to lump them in with where they are now. Otherwise, a whole ton of bands would belong to several states. Also, the current output rule disqualifies both your choices there.

Man, I'm regretting my decision of editing the original post to fit in all the bands that people mention. I didn't realize that it would be so tedious (though I should've)! Oh well, gotta finish what I start.
The Replacements broke up ages ago, didn't they?

Are the Jayhawks still around? I was tempted to mention them for Minnesota, but I haven't heard any of their recent stuff.

Are the Jayhawks still around? I was tempted to mention them for Minnesota, but I haven't heard any of their recent stuff. They haven't released an album in a few years, but I think that they're still together, yes. About half of the last Golden Smog album was pretty much the Jayhawks.

Could we qualify Bob Dylan for Minnesota? Paul Westerberg. You just can't be more Minnesota than him. Ya know.

Aren't Drive-By Truckers at least in part from Alabama?
R.E.M. own the Georgia spot.
Springsteen should have a lock on New Jersey, but given how good Ted Leo's stuff has been in the last decade, he'd slip in instead, IMO.
Who gets New York?
