Prince's career is the definition of "inconsistent."
No, the reason I'm championing Westerberg for Minnesota is simply b/c I graduated high school there, and I must've known twentyfive guys (at least!) who could've fit right into a police line-up with the former 'mats main man. Westerberg could have his picture next to the word "Minnesotan" in the dictionary -- he just exudes Minnesotaness.
Prince, on the other hand, was always a bit of an anomoly, both for Minneapolis and the state as a whole. I won't argue with using the purple one as the exemplar of the Gopher State, but in my heart of hearts, I know that Westerberg really is the state's rock poet laureate.

I know that Prince has always said he's from Minnesota, but I always figured he was really a space alien or something.

Good topic Ryo!
Well, I kinda split S. Carolina and Virginia as my home states....From SC, there's not a whole lot. The only two I can think of are Hootie and Edwin McCain. I'd vote for the latter.
From VA, I think DMB is from these parts, not sure though. Missy Elliot and Timberland spend time in VA Beach, and there's Virginia Coalition. I'm not big on any of these act though. Oh, Dave Grohl is from Alexandria, VA, so I guess you can put the Foo Fighters in the VA slot.
From California I'd say Comets On Fire
Oregon = Sleater Kinney Washington = Pearl Jam New York = Beastie Boys Alabama = Drive By Truckers Florida = Creed (sike) Georgia = REM Mass = Mission of Burma Illinois - Wilco (Neko Case doesn't even come close Rocky :-p ) Texas = Mars Volta Michigan = White Stripes
That's all I've got for now...I'll post more later.

Well this is what the list looks like so far:
Alabama - Drive By Truckers Alaska Arizona - Calexico Arkansas - American Princes California - Tool/ Comets On Fire Colorado Connecticut Delaware District of Columbia Florida Georgia - REM/ Allman Brothers/ Of Montreal Hawaii Idaho - Built To Spill Illinois - Wilco Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts - Pixies/ Damon and Naomi/ Mission of Burma Michigan - Blanche/ White Stripes Minnesota - Paul Westerberg/ Prince Mississippi Missouri - Son Volt Montana Nebraska - Matthew Sweet Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey - Yo La Tengo/ Ted Leo and the Pharmacists New Mexico - the Shins New York - Sonic Youth/ Beastie Boys North Carolina North Dakota - Lawrence Welk/ Jonny Lang Ohio - Robert Pollard/ Nine Inch Nails Oklahoma - Flaming Lips Oregon - Sleater Kinney Pennsylvania - The Modey Lemon Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota - Indigenous Tennessee - The Raconteurs Texas - The Mars Volta Utah Vermont Virginia Washington - Pearl Jam West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming
Isn't Chapel Hill supposed to have a pretty good music scene? The North Carolina spot is still open. Also a bit surprised that New York and Texas haven't been as diverse as I thought it would be.

Oh duh, I missed that Paul mentioned Beastie Boys for New York. Will fix.
Also, Ken, I remember you being really, really hard on Around the Sun (or am I just imagining that?), so it's kind of surprising that you'd give the Georgia spot to REM.

I guess also Ben Folds is probably the NC choice...most of the other great bands are no longer active.

Creed broke up a couple of years ago. You must have missed the celebration.

Trent Reznor is from Penn but NIN is from Ohio. I thought that Reznor was from Ohio, but NIN was from NOLA. According to wikipedia Reznor was born in Mercer, Penn and moved to Ohio in 1985. I don't think he moved to New Orleans until after The Downward Spiral.
