PEW read your blog....pretty interesting. i never really thought much about the stones ripping the beatles off, but you certainly make a case.
i dig the stones and all, but i don't think they're nearly as good as some make them out to be. IMHO, the kinks kick the shit out of the stones. mick/keith are just nowhere near the level of songwriting the john/paul and ray davies were.
oh, but one of the things that crossed my mind while reading you blog was where you said john was fed up and referenced his frustration in 'dig a pony'....do you think it was an insult or just a little jab to rile the stones up a bit? john seemed pretty cool w/ the stones...if you watch the stones 'rock n' roll circus', mick interview john, and keith plays bass in the super group the dirty mac (mitch mitchell - drums, eric clapton - lead guitar, keith richards - bass, john lennon - vocals/guitar, yoko ono - annoying screaming jibberish).
ok, that is all -- didn't mean to take away from all the cool/funny pics here.

The Rolling Stones are old, that is hilarious... Yeah, I don't know why more people don't joke about it. It's comedy gold.

If you asked me to rank all the original British Invasion bands as of 1970 I would rank the stones behind the beatles, the kinks, the who and even the moody blues and slightly ahead of the animals and the hollies. Lennon was probablly just taking a little jab at them, from everything I've read/heard the Beatles never really took the Stones or anyone else as a threat.

Jokes about the Stones being old are.... old. I've been hearing them ever since I was a kid. Every time they go on tour, I hear about their "combined ages make them older than the Egyptian pyramids" or something like that.
Had the Stones been black, I'm sure they never would've had to deal with this crap. Or is it because Jagger still dares to dance? Because James Brown danced into his 70s and no one called him an old fart. Is there a term for this kind of discrimination PEW? Agejism perhaps?

Old people aren't supposed to be in rock bands, we don't know how to handle it. Though there are plenty of acts still on tour getting up into their fifties and sixties these days. That's a mark of how young rock really is. Our rock stars are supposed to die young or fade away. Fuck that, I say. I hope the Stones tour into their ninties.

I do too. I just hope I'll still be able to attend their concerts, being in my 60s and all. I'm pretty sure I'll be nowhere near as fit as Mick is today.

My real problem with the Stones are that they have always pandered to the winds of popular taste. When psychedeia got big, they copied that. When country rock got big, they copied that. They even copied disco when that was big. They started off copying AMerican blues artists, then spent the 60s trying to copy the Beatles. Theres just a lack of originality in everything they do, that makes their music uninteresting. Also their 'being controversial' just for the sake of being controversial during the 60s and even the 70s was just plain boring. There was nothing edgy or 'bad boy' about them. And for the last 20 years they have made a mockery out of Rock-n-Roll. Pulling out the same old tired-ass poses, playing the same old sorry-ass songs, like an over rehearsed funeral procession, night after night is just pathetic. Their shows and songwriting are totally uninspiring and as artistically/creatively void as they've always been.

My real problem with the Stones are that they have always pandered to the winds of popular taste. The same can be said for Bowie. Change is a good thing PEW. You've obviously never been to one of their shows. There's a reason why they're still one of, if not the most popular live act around. And believe me, it's not because they suck. And how the hell are they creatively void as a live act? They're just a rock band. You want to see a spectacle? Go to the circus. Or better yet, join one ya freak.

If you believe in good and bad, and see the world that way, then that is fine. I have no problem with change. But I do see that copycats are often less interesting and certainly less authenic that the innovators they are copying.
