I meant no disrespect to the cheese-lovin' Brit and his super-intelligent roommate (Gromit can't really be considered a pet, can he?). I included it on a list of the most anticipated releases of this year some posts back.
And yes, The Wrong Trousers is their best short. What a complex chase scene...

Is that the one with the Penguin and the mechanical pants? If so, yes, it's brilliant.

adam, after some more investigation, it seems it was released as 'list' in america and britain, and ark in australia- where it was released first. confusing. :S
watched the pianist today. was good, not fantastic. adrian brody constantly continues to surprise me.
though the gong for best director left me a bit dumbfounded after the 'making of' documentary, where the production was nothing new. the fashion designer claimed, 'i wanted colour at first, reds, browns and yellows, and then after the war begins, everything is monochromatic'. geez, couldn't see that artistic choice coming a mile off with blazing sirens.
it was a great film, truly, and executed extremely well, i just have this quiet pipe dream that the best director gongs will go to someone who pushes the envelope artistically.

which, of course roman polanksi has done before. of course.
in no way would i deny polanski his directorial brilliance, but i just didn't think the pianist did for me what chinatown did for example, where i walked realising instantly the power of his directing.
though, i suppose like all other great directors, unfortunately all his works go under the scrutiny and comparison to his other masterpieces. like scorcese. do we think he has a chance at the oscar this year?

My last DVD purchase... Peter Gabriel's "Play the Videos" a compilation of all his career videos... a very interesting little set of videos it is too, showcases his incredibly innovative style, as well as the many new ideas he used to create visual feasts to go along wioth his music! A most enjoyable disc!

That sounds like a . . . sound investment in a dvd, actually. Gabriel always pushed the artistic envelope with his videos.
My personal favorite "peter gabriel video" would be the motion picture BIRDY, directed by Alan Parker.

If you're asking about Polanski, he isn't nominated this year, although I wonder how voters will react to his upcoming Oliver Twist adaptation... I think its the year for Scorsese, even if he's receiving for the wrong film and a long period of being overlooked (the dark horse is Eastwood). The thing is, as we all know, the Academy voters have a political and personal bias that prevents them from rewarding the challenging works that managed to get nominated, choosing instead to give to what makes them feel good. This is why: Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction; Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan (or in my opinion, The Thin Red Line); Dances With Wolves beat Goodfellas and so on and so on.... Entertainment Weekly once published an excellent explanation why Raging Bull lost Best Picture: "Is it all surprising that Raging Bull lost the Best Picture Oscar to Ordinary People? Robert Redford's fine film is a dream of genteel, proto-yuppie healing, whereas Martin Scorsese's boxing bio is a howl from a storm drain. Redford probed the fissures in respectable folk; Scorsese went searching for nobility in a thoroughly despicable man. Which would you have given an award to?"By the way, Raging Bull ranked #5 on their list of 100 Greatest Films Ever Made; Ordinary People didn't make the list.

I think its the year for Scorsese, even if he's receiving for the wrong film and a long period of being overlooked It isn't his best film (it's a very good one), but the direction in The Aviator is fantastic, the usual brilliance from Scorsese. He deserves the award, past oversights or not. It's hard to argue this film against that when you have so many people voting. A consensus is always going to work it's way to the middle. Most of the time a "good" film wins, it's not the end of the world. I'd rather be remembered down the road than awarded right away. I just try to be excited when the right choice is actually made. It's a bummer, but it's just history repeating itself. We musn't forget that the "right" thing can be taken too far, look at Return of the King winning every award last year, even when it wasn't the best.

Hey Doc, did you ever get a chance to check out Some Kind of Monster yet? If so, can you recommend it?

I can certainly recommend it. It's a tad over-long; if they cut out about an hour, it would be Some Kind Of Gem.
