I finally figured it out ! When Melaun put up the Juana's Addicion board, & I read thru several regulars here putting in not much more than a "Meh" for them, I experienced a "Eureka" moment, that I was a dyed-in-the-wool Rocker, and most everyone else, w/the exception of Melaun and Adam and a few more that dabble into the Rock, aren't really cut from the same cloth.
Then, whilst riding the bus home, I listened to The Stooges' THE WEIRDNESS on headphones for the first time (I'd already listened to it on the home stereo of course), and while it blasted into my ears, and I paid attention to all the details - Scott Asheton's drum playing and his brother Ron's squealing guitar, Mike Watt's straight ahead bass lickin, and Iggy's surprisingly intact vocals -- it dawned on me that this album really rocks out like nobody's business! And furthermore - - when it settles back from rockin, like in the title track for instance -- the songs are really well crafted, in the classic garage -rock standard, and I experienced a wonderful epiphany wherein I realized THE WEIRDNESS is that rarest of rock'n'roll beasties - - a much later-era album produced by aging rock veterans whose last album was released over thirty years ago, but (and here's the clincher) whose new album is every bit as potent and valid as Fun House and Raw Power combined.
Yea, (& verily) but I beseech thee to crank this album on headphones and then try to defy me. See, the trick is in the mix: everyone knows RAW POWER was mixed into the red - - so when you put that album on at regular volume, it fuckin' kicks it outta the speakers like nobody's business. Put in The Weirdness (or Fun House, for that matter) at regular volume, and it sounds rather tepid by contrast. *But*, relatively speaking, when you adjust the volume to make up for that difference -- & especially if you put it on headphones -- (*or else just crank the fuck out of it*) -- only then can one discern the true, honest to goodness garage rocking excellence of it ! (At least, that's how it worked for me)
In any case, at one point during the album, Iggy sings a lyric about how he "used to hang w/rockers / used to hang w/mods", and that's when it hit me:
The way I see it, about 80% of the Castaways are Mods, and 20% are Rockers. Or, to put it another way, ol' thoRny here is in the minority (so no wonder few can get behind my unbridled enthusiasm for everything that truly \m/ ROCKS \m/
I mean, look at Riley, for instance. He USED to be a Rocker! But now he's a Mod ! (Or at the very least, if he's still a true blue Rocker, he hides it very well from us these days)... He seems to have grown UP and out of the rocker phase (unlike me, who's been stuck in it since I was 13 {A mild form of retardation? At least its only rock'n'roll but I like it!})!
IN any case, that is why I've created this poll.
Realize that I understand - - times have changed. Things have become more "complex". *HOwever*, in the interest of preserving the spirit of the poll, please try and understand that back in Iggy's younger days, you were either a
~Mod
or a
~Rocker
That was it. It's a simple classification system, like "boys" and "girls". So take a deep look inside yourself, be honest, and think about which of the 2 categories you best represent.
I could have left only 2 choices, but as you can see, I've included the options of choosing "BOTH" or "NEITHER", if you really feel you must insist that you fall outside of these petty classifications.
But to keep it funner, I suggest you limit your choices to the first to, to keep w/the spirit of this game (only pick 'both' or 'neither' if you feel you truly have to).
Imo - & regardless of how things may have changed - I think we're all really just Mods or Rockers, when you get right down to it, and besides, both are pretty cool. Don't throw away your opportunity to be known here as a Mod or a Rocker ... please try voting for one of those.
So let the poll begin. Be proud of your inner Mod/Rocker !
