I have one Blur song recorded on cassette (Country Sad Ballad, I think it's called) and I really like it. I've heard Parklife before but it bored me to tears. I didn't really give it a chance though before I gave it away. I want to buy the best album they have and this here is an attempt toward that.

The Great Escape is my fave. I think that the concensus though is that either Modern Life is Rubbish or Parklife mark the band's finest moment. Country Sad Ballad Man is from their self-titled, which was also by far their most succesful release here in the Colonies.
Be warned that Blur are a VERY British band, in the same way that the Kinks or the Jam were. A lot of the lyrical references blow right by us Yanks. Worth the effort though.

Also I gave 13 a listen once at a music store where they had one of those computers that you could listen to the first 30 seconds or so of each song. I went through 13 and it was rather messy and noisy. Not that I mind that. There was some poster on RS.com that thought 13 was about the greatest album ever. I don't remember who it was so they might be here too.

Um, Ken, you forgot to vote, dude.

Messy and noisy is a pretty good description of 13, and of Think Tank, IMHO. Kool might disagree with that latter one, though.
I haven't voted yet b/c it's really hard for me to pick one. I love both Parklife and The Great Escape, and I've never heard Modern Life is Rubbish, but have been assured that it's aces as well. Also, for a different kind of sound and listener, it's really hard to beat the self-titled.
I guess if I'm recommending one to you, Mel, it'd be Blur. If I'm naming my fave, it's The Great Escape. And if I've got to pick a "best" it's either that one or Parklife.
I'll flip a coin to decide ... it'll probably be The Great Escape though. But I still think you should check out the self-titled. I think it'd be more up your alley, frankly.

Blur's best album is their greatest hits collection. 13 is indeed messy but there are a few gems on that one. I think out of the albums listed I'd go with the self-titled one. Followed by Think Tank.

um, yeah, what Ken said. Try out Blur first. It was my first experience with a Blur album and I remember enjoying it a lot at the time. Although if you can find the best of Blur, go for that instead.

I told ya that Kool wouldn't like my characterization of Think Tank. I don't think that Blur have ever made a really awful album, but they've done some hit and miss stuff (like 13). Either the self-titled or (as Kool suggested) their Greatest Hits collection should be a good intro for you.

And after making that considered recommendation, I've voted for The Great Escape. Why? Because the poll question is which one I "dig the most" and I've listened to The Great Escape more than the rest of Blur's catalog combined.

Blur and The Great Escape are probably the two most accessible, especially if you like Country Sad Ballad Man. Modern Life is Rubbish is maybe a bit too British for me, it and Leisure bore me. Parklife and 13 are the two most realized artistically. Think Tank is mostly crap.

Because the poll question is which one I "dig the most" and I've listened to The Great Escape more than the rest of Blur's catalog combined. While I consider Parklife and 13 "better" albums, I'm going to vote for Great Escape for the same reason.

Yeah, that's the same reason I voted for 'Blur'. My first Blur album which also got the most spins.
Think Tank definitely has a few messy moments, but the messy moments on 13 are much worse. Although 13 probably does have the better standout tracks. Apart from that first single, "Tender" I think it was. Almost 8 minutes of hearing Damon whining "Come on, come on, come on, oh my baby, oh why. oh my". I can't stand that song, and why it was chosen as a lead off single from 13 still baffles me. If we were doing a theme-album over at title-tag of shitty songs from bands we like, that would probably be my first choice.

I love Tender, what a great song but No Distance Left To Run is really the genius track... Coffee & TV, Bugman, Mellow Song, what a great album.

I agree with you ded, just hold "Tender" and everything else you mentioned is indeed wonderful.

I hope you're with someone who makes you feel safe in your sleeping tonight
..maybe the best sing they ever wrote. That's what breaking up with Justine Frischmann will do... and herion, just so Holzman's theory has yet a another check in that column.
