Seger and Springsteen are on two different playing fields. Seger-"Old Time Rock And Roll" "Shakedown" "Like a ROCK" heysuess. "Think Illa goa feeshun uh and bring mey cooler along--wheres my seeger greatest hits tape?" Same with Steve Miller. Good songs-his voice is just so ehhhhhh . Early albums are OK. Did Springsteen ever put forth anything as bland as that? Listen to the last track off Devils and Dust and hear about what the seemingly innocent turtles do once you float down a river. Springsteen Vs. Doobies with Michael McDonald. I cant stand Michael McDonalds voice sometimes. I have had dreams where he has to sing through his beard to make that unintelligible voice....."Alright Michael take 4..." "Cant do it...shaved the beard off..."

Uh yeah, this is a pretty silly thread. I'm not the biggest fan of either, although I'm slowly, repeat, slowly getting into the Boss. Anyway, even I know this isn't even a competition. It's like a 16 seed playing a number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament (maybe a 2 vs. 15).
How's 'Nebraska' anyway? I've been thinking of picking that one up. I only have 3 Bruce albums (E St. Shuffle, Born, Darkness) - I like the Shuffle the best.

Nebraska is utterly unlike any of the Springsteen you've got, Paul. It's also one of the best things Bruce has ever released.

When he lets out that yelp near the end of "State Trooper", it gets me every damn time.

I have to go with the Bruce on this one. I also take issue with the fact that Bruce didn't put his blood, sweat, and tears into his work like PEW has suggested. No, that's not what I suggested at all. What I DO suggest is that you go back and read what I said because you obviously didnt understand it the first time.

When he lets out that yelp near the end of "State Trooper", it gets me every damn time. That yelp has always reminded me of Alan Vega and Suicide. I never knew if it was directly inspired by Vega, but I do remember reading an interview with Springsteen several years ago and he name-checked Suicide more than once. If you've never heard Suicide, check them out. They were one of THE most original acts of the early 80's (and their originality was the sort that made many people hate them). You'll see what I mean in comparing Springsteen's "whoo"s with Vega's.

Uh, PEW I did read it. And I quote: "And last of all, lets take a comparitive look at how both men are considered to represent the blue-collar working class ethos. We see that Seger didnt really make it big until he was nearly 30 years old. We see that he had to toil in small clubs and work his way up the ranks, paying his dues, signing with small Indie labels, endlessly on the road trying for one last chance to make it in the biz. Springsteen was being called the New Dylan as soon as his first album came out and was getting his picture on the cover of the top magazines while riding around in limos. So when it comes to who actually represents the blue-colar workign man most authentically, the answer has to be Seger. "
That statement there pretty much to me would represent that the person who made that statement doesn't think that Springsteen earned his position.
Look, don't take it out on me that everyone around here pretty much thinks you are nothing more than a blog whoring shit stirring ass. Change your approach. I don't think you can, that's why I say vote you off the island with out a paddle.
