I just listened to some of the Black Lips - got a few songs from various albums, including two from the new one. Anyway, I don't know....I mean they're certainly not bad, but I don't see, err hear, what the fuss is all about. To me, it's basically just 60's garage rock/punk/pop. Hell, the Kinks kinda had that sound 40 years ago. I'm not trying to slam them by any means, but I don't get what's so "original" about them. I've heard about these guys, and I've read articles in Rolling Stone, and online about them, and it seems like they're media darlings right now. Again, I don't get what all the hub is about bub. It's actually music that's typically right up my alley, but I don't understand why all of this critical praise surrounds them. Am I missing something? Granted I've only heard like 6 songs, but that was enough to make an impression, and my impression is stated above.

BTW, the Justice remixes of JT's LoveStoned, and Britney's Me Against the Music are wicked.

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss -- Raising Sand Normaly, I don't bother with current releases, I usualy wait for the Year's Reviews from a bunch of critics and when I see a title more than a couple of times in their Year's Best, I then check those out ... I made an exception for this one, not yet released BTW!!, cause Ayinger praised it in a PM he sent me along with his Adios ... Very nice indeed ... Will definitely buy it

Paul, dude, yeah, not the most original thing in the land that's for sure. You are spot on about the Kinks comparison but I have to say that I think the reason why I like them so much is that they are just so awesome at it. It's like Pavement meets Beefheart and for me, even if a band is not original at all, if they are really good at the sound they have then I'm fine by it. I think it's fun and it's nice to hear that sound with some newer songs because frankly, dude, I've worn out most of my Kinks records.
Justice is quite fancy. That and the Digitalism record are two of the best electro releases of this year.

They (Black Lips) are a fun band, with loads of energy - I'll give 'em that. I just don't get the original thing. I've read a few articles/reviews on them, and I see the critic calls them original, doing there own thing, etc...to me, they're really isn't much new with them. Now, this doesn't mean I don't like them. Like I said earlier, I like the energy, and garage rock is up my alley, I just don't find it original.
Man, I hear you w/ the Kinks. They will always be one of my favorite bands, and Ray will always be one of my all time favorite song writers, but I just can't listen to them lately. Now and then I still bust out the 'Lola' album, and a few weeks ago I pulled the debut from the vault. I was actually quite surprised how much I enjoyed the early Kinks sound. Anyway, I got that outta my system, and for the time being, I'm done with the Kinks.

Third (second?) the Justice-nomination! Definitely one of the best dance albums of the last few years.

That and the Digitalism record are two of the best electro releases of this year. I think the previous Black Lips records were good, but lacked the depth of Good Bad Not Evil. By slowing things down, they've improved their sound tenfold. And really, this is an album that would be more comfortable on a mix with The Cramps than The Kinks. They've tapped into the bluesy goth sound that a lot of the 80s psychobilly guys had, which is something that's largely ignored among your typical "garage rock revivalists" these days. This on top of melding it with the aforementioned Pavement indie drone...good stuff. That new Les Savy Sav is great. The Justice is good enough for top fifteen, but the singles stand out more than the album as a whole.

Nah, it's a good list. I forgot that Skinny Puppy was released this year! This has probably been one of the best years for music in a really long time. There is so much good stuff out there that it's just insane.
