The Modfather spits on Sting
Paul Weller spat on a portrait of Sting on Wednesday (March 28) at the Teenage Cancer Trust gig.
As previously reported Weller joined Noel Gallagher at the charity event for a version of The Jam's 'The Butterfly Collector' and The Beatles' 'All You Need Is Love'.
According to The Mirror, during the interval of the event at London's Royal Albert Hall Weller saw a picture of Sting's gig from 2000 and decided to deliver his own style of music criticism.
According to the report, Weller "marched straight up to it [the photo], coughed-up as much phlegm as he could muster and planted it plum in the middle of The Police frontman's head... as he walked away, Weller then snarled: 'Fucking twat!'".
Weller has never shy of expressing his opinions of Sting, recently stating: "He's a fucking horrible man. Not my cup of tea at all. Fucking rubbish. No edge, no attitude, no nothing."[/quote]

this had me ROLLING ON THE FLOOR with LAUGHTER!
Weller-AWESOME music with the Jam, so so with the Style Council (YES I have heard almost every single note they put out--i even got the box set. kinda slick), hit and miss solo stuff, more good than bad.
STING-AWESOME music with the Police, so-so solo stuff (which is kinda slick and almost bland--"We Sow the Black Seam"--shut up--now that I think about it)-and he even dismissed Rock and Roll saying everything has been done so he could be on some vanity project on a respected classical label..its not as criminal as OJ but its close. Maybe a very adult and honest thing to do for a rich man who got his millions from the ROCK itself. Have all the stupid tantric sex you want in your mansion and tell me how to SELL THE STOCKS AND SPEND THE MONEY. That OFFENDED ME! Fuck you Sting. That SUCKS! I know people dont buy Sting albums to get their angst on but SHIT. I had to hear that on the radio over loudspeakers when all I wanted to do is BUY FOOD so I could LIVE!
My dream:
Im standing in line at a store of some kind. Sting cuts in front of me.
Sting: "I hope you dont mind...Do you know who I am?"
me: Youre the biggest asshole in the universe!
then some kind of violence takes place, the YOUNG ONES (British comedy series) come out and help me in my cause--vivian, neil etc...
(I only use that PLACE IN LINE thing cos it happened to a friend of mine with John Cougar Mellencamp--that totally tainted my opinion of his music)

Weller wins. If I were him I wouldnt have stopped there. I would have been ARRESTED in my anti-sting tirade (notice sting with the lower case s).

Weller's Style Council work is embarassing and it still makes Sting's non-Police work sound like Matchbox 20 or some shit like that.

Yeah, the Police were better than the Style Council, but I'm not so sure that Sting's solo career was any better than Weller's dalliance with jazz inflected pop. IMHO: The Jam>the Police>Paul Weller's solo career>Sting's solo career=Style Council. So Weller wins this one easily. Hell, it isn't that much of a gap between the Police and Weller's solo work. The Jam take the top slot easily. |

Didn't we already talk about this on Mods vs. rockers? Anyway....The Police actually are better then The Jam and unfortunately Sting's solo career at it's best is better Weller's at his best. They're both twats but I think Weller is less of a pretentious twat and more of an asshole but you know one of those likable principled assholes. I don't know then. I might just have to vote for George Michael.

i used to own the Jam 5 CD boxset, when i was a young tyke..... UNTIL I SOLD IT!!!!1
why? coz it was deadly boring. the mod/punk songs were undernourished, Weller's singing voice was like a goat bleating in pain, and the later soul, cod-jazz, baroque pop songs were raspy and annoying.
The Police had chops. and they had tunes. and they were good.

Sting is a blathering, tantric, tree-bothering twat.
Weller is an over-earnest, gobby, mockney, posturing middle-class boy in disguise. Even his greeny was done as a calculated piece of moddism, just to try and show us how 'real' he is, and not at all a washed up, comfortable old fart with no fire left inside like we might be forgiven for thinking, honest guv.
Michael is musically too lightweight to be a contender, and his best song, "Father Figure", always puts me in mind of incestuous pederasts, which can only be a minus, frankly.
By default I'll vote for Weller on the strength of "Eton Rifles" and "Going Underground". The Police probably come out top overall with Zenyatta Mondatta etc, but Sting doesn't want my vote anyway, since it can't be recycled.

I reckon the Police are a better (technically speaking) band than the Jam, but I enjoy the Jam more. But this here thread is between Sting and Weller, and I think ded summed it up nicely.
