If you had a time machine that would only travel to concerts and you had only one shot at it, which concert would you choose to attend?
I, for one, would have loved to have had a front row seat to the New Years Day performance of Band Of Gypsys, but if I could pick one, it would probably be U2 on their Joshua Tree tour. I know that might seem like a lame choice since they are still around performing these days, but the 4 boys from Dublin had more passion in those days.

I saw U2 in '87 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. It was a very early stop on the Joshua Tree tour ... and it was a religious experience. The regular set closed with "Pride" and the audience kept singing until they came back out for the "encores."
If I could see any show ever ... predictable, but I'd wanna see the Clash at Bonds in '81, or the Boss in a smallish club c. Darkness, or The River tours.

Good thread Melon.
I saw U2 play at the Tokyo Dome about ten years ago. They were good, but I mean, it was a fucking dome. That's no place to see live music, especially at the prices they charge. They were here in support of War though, and that was definitely at a smaller venue, so that would've been pretty awesome to see.
The Clash came here too once, but this was in the 80s so they were pretty huge by then. I don't know where they played, and I doubt that any of the venues I frequent were around at the time (well the Budokan was still there, but I don't exactly "frequent" that place), but it had to be pretty damn big to accommodate a band of their caliber, so I don't know if I'd want to see them. I mean I would, but not if I can time travel only once. Ditto for most of the "big" acts, really.
Oh yeah, one "big" act that I actually did see was the Pixies a couple of years ago. I'll probably get hell for this, but I didn't think that they were that good. I mean, they were decent and all, but the biggest thrill for me was just the idea of seeing this historically important band first-hand. Without that historical angle, it was a pretty ordinary show - though of course the songs themselves were stellar. But then again I was stuck near the back of this humongous, cavernous room that is Zepp Tokyo (I arrived right before the show started), so I might've left with a different opinion if I'd been able to see them up close.
It would've been kind of cool to see the Beatles play at the Budokan just so that I can say that they suck live with the authority of someone who was actually there. Yeah I know that they weren't always terrible on stage, and that they had a lot of disadvantages working against them, we've already gone over that, but their shows at the Budokan were absolutely horrendous, unless the live footage I've seen were doctored.

I wish I was in the front row of any given Bon Jovi concert, during the Slippery When Wet era, just so I could pull out my 9 mm and plant one right between Jon Bon Jovi's eyes and save the world from all the horrible music that followed... and I'm not just talking Bon Jovi's music, but the Nickelbacks and Creeds of the world. Bon Jovi paved the way for all that crap.
Seriously though, I'd love to have seen Prince during the Sign O' The Times era, when he had all the bimbos on stage too and was at his artistic peak.

Have The The ever come to Japan? I don't know, but I'd assume that they have. They sound like they'd be totally sublime to see live, so an early 90s show by them would be a strong candidate.
Really though, I think I'd be more inclined to time travel to recent concerts. Concerts that happened like 20 or 30 years ago - they just seem so distant that I can't imagine what they'd be like. And obviously I'd go for international acts over Japanese acts.
I think one of my biggest concert regrets is missing Aimee Mann when she came here to play the Liquid Room a couple years ago - her first time in Japan since her Til Tuesday years. If her band was as on as they were in the live DVD that I saw, it should've been an amazing show. The fact that she may never come here again just compounds my frustration. Really, I was dying to see her, but it was one of the busiest time of the year for us at work, and there was just no way that I could've made it. Interestingly though, when I jokingly complained about it at the office, I found out that a colleague who I mildly dislike (emphasis on "mildly" - I have pretty good rapport at work) was also a fan, and he too was sad that he couldn't see her. Who would've thought.
65daysofstatic have been to Japan three times in the space of less than a year, and incredibly enough I've missed all three. I guess I'd time travel a couple months back so that I'd get tickets for their show at the Club Quattro in March instead of someone else whose show was held on the same day (I didn't know about 65dos until after bought tickets for that someone else - Yoeko Kurahashi). The only problem is that that other show was pretty awesome as well. But yeah, I'm sure they'll be here again, so I probably wouldn't want to waste my once-only time travel opportunity on them.

I was in a bar once and ended up asking this guy I had met minutes before, "If you had to pick one, who would you say is the quintessential rock band?" He said, "I would have to go with Bon Jovi." I lie to you not. He went on and on about how Jon had changed his style so many times throughout the years to fit into the times. I had a hard time keeping a straight face in front of this guy. My mind was screaming, "You CAN'T be serious." However, Montgomery is the one place in this country I'm not surprised to hear such musical ignorance.

Bon Jovi's huge in Japan, I'm sure you'll get people saying the same thing here.

The very first Black Flag show. If I had a time machine, that's where I would go.

Wait, I didn't properly catch this the first time, but you ask questions like that to guys you only met a couple minutes ago at a bar? You have a weird way of communicating with people. I don't know, I might even give the same answer if I were in his position.

No I wouldn't actually, I'd answer Nelson of course. Except I doubt that too many people here know who they are.

Ryo -- I actually have a copy of a show that the Clash played in Japan in '82. Pretty damn good. Not as good as the Bonds dates the year before, but by this time they'd lost Topper to heroin and were well on their way to burning out. Still, not a bad use for a time machine, IMHO. If you're gonna see the Beatles, then you'd wanna go to the Cavern club in Liverpool before they broke internationally, or maybe even their (legendary) all-night gigs in Hamburg. Those definitely did not suck.

Um, it's 3:30 in the morning right now. Can't sleep -- bout of insomnia. So I figured I'd see what was up here.

I'd like to rewind to 1970 and see the Who live at Leeds.
