I think those are the main five, unless someone corrects me. Not even close, for me. Pearl Jam deserves to win this and they probably will. If the MELVINS were on this list, there is no doubt I would vote for them. So yeah

I think Ryo may be onto something. I mean, Heart's from Seattle, right? Where's the love for Heart? They were still active in the 90s. They're a better band than all these guys combined. Truth is none of these wankers has even come close to writing a classic as good as "Barracuda" or "Magic Man".

The Melvins are definitely better than Mudhoney, but I guess we're in a more specific timeframe here....
With the exception of Superunknown, I agree with JLLM's list. I suppose I'd do this:
1. No Code 2. Dirt 3. Badmotorfinger 4. In Utero 5. Nevermind
I really can't decide who my favorite would be here. It changes too often.

None of these bands really speak to me anymore. When I was in high school at the height of the grunge era, I did listen to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and AIC. I couldn't really get into Soundgarden or Mudhoney, although in retrospect this is probably because I started in the wrong place with Soundgarden (with Superunknown instead of some of the earlier and more badass albums like Louder Than Love and Badmotorfinger - but Superunknown left such a bad taste in my mouth with its warmed over Led Zep-wannbe clichés that it kinda soured me on the band forever - and god I hated Black Hole Sun! And god this is the longest parenthetical aside ever!)
Pearl Jam does sound really dated to me now - I didn't realize this was the case until my friend played them in his car a few months ago and I was shocked at how poorly Vs. had aged. I remembered how much it used to rouse me to hear Eddie Vedder screaming "Drop the leash! We are young! Get out of my fucking face!" so I was looking forward to bit of old adolescent nostalgia when that song came on but even that song sounded all wrong circa 2007. Sad.
Nirvana sounds less dated but they still fail to make any deep emotional connection for me, just as they did in the 90s when I listened to them because everyone else did, but when it was still really the Clash and X who got my blood racing instead of Nirvana.
Strangely, though, Dirt still sounds fucking awesome to me. I don't think AIC were as historically important as PJ and Nirvana, and I don't think they ever released a single other album that was even remotely interesting (with apologies to the Jar of Flies fans here) whereas PJ and Nirvana both released several great albums. But, since Dirt is the only album from the whole bunch that really still does it for me, I'm being an iconoclast and voting AIC.
So pfffffffft.

This is exactly how I felt, and currently feel about Pearl Jam. Looking back, I think British bands of the 90s made better music than these Seattle dudes did. It's definitely aged better, even though at the time I preferred this grung-ier stuff. But now I'd rather listen to Pulp, Suede or Blur than of these bands here. A lot of their music now sounds dull and depressing to me and I simply can't relate to it anymore. Edit: What I said here does not apply to Soundgarden, who I still think were a great band, despite being Zep knock-offs.

Yeah, well that's described Black Hole Sun and maybe 2 other tracks on the album. I love that album and I have no love for either Led Zep or Black Hole Sun, believe me.

I've never liked "Black Hole Sun". I remember I bought that album the day I heard "Spoonman", so BHS wasn't a single yet. I taped that album for a friend of mine at the time, and I left off BHS because I thought it was the most boring song on the album. Then when it became a hit, he started complaining to me about leaving it off. I think that song's brilliant video is what really made it a hit.

For me Seattle was the king of the 90s but for different reasons.
Sub Pop (there were great bands other than Nirvana on that label), Up records (Modest Mouse, Kill Rock Stars (Sleater Kinney, Unwound, Karp), RX Remedy (Mars Accelerator), and of course K Records, which yes I know was based out of Olympia but it's still the Northwest and only an hour from Seattle.
