I couldn't really get into Soundgarden or Mudhoney, although in retrospect this is probably because I started in the wrong place with Soundgarden (with Superunknown instead of some of the earlier and more badass albums like Louder Than Love and Badmotorfinger - but Superunknown left such a bad taste in my mouth ....and god I hated Black Hole Sun!) Thank you.

On The Melvins though, Thorn- which albums do you find to be the real standouts? Their catalogue's quite large currently. Only heard Maggot, Houdini, Stag and the last one with Jello BIafra which all were interesting without really setting me on fire...

me, I like Stoner Witch, even though it's a relatively 'late era' Melvins... but it rocks ! Thing is, I never had that many of their albums... Crybaby is decent, tho' it's really collabs, w/Hank III, Tool, Helmet, and others. A fine album. I base my opinion that they should not only be included, but win this poll, on a couple of reasons. One, I've seen them live about 3 times, and every time it was a super dope ass killer show. Two, they are real original legends, who pretty much started the grunge movement, but never got commercial recognition. They continue to crank out the albums though, and have come out w/many experimental collabs, like the recent one I got on vinyl w/ Lustmord, "Pigs Of The Roman Empire". With all that in mind, I just see the Melvins absolutely crushing every one of the bands on this pool under one foot. And third, take a look at King Buzzo's hair ! It deserves a prize all on its own :b

They're just way more influential than any of the bands on this poll, as well. Besides influencing them all. . . the Melvins have influence everyone from Tool, to Hank III, to rage against the machine, to lord knows who all. They are truly rock gods.

Buzz Osborne is certainly one of the most unsung drummers. And you gotta love a band who releases this:

My good fortune was that I started with Louder Than Love and it had (and I've said it here before) the impact I felt when I heard Zepp I for the first time AT the time it came out...it was one of 'This band's going to go a lo-o-ong fucking way...and I am definitely going to be there'.....

The European version of Superunknown has the mighty "She Likes Surprises" at the end too, which just added a little icing to the cake. I love the sound of Badmotorfinger but it's a bit more repetitive and has a less ambitious scope, though obviously if you love the sound you probably like its focus.

The best album of the grunge movement/era was Love Battery's Dayglo, you do know.

I was always partial to Soundgarden for their musicianship, so I'll probably vote for them, but for body of work Pearl Jam is clearly the winner, although I would still suggest that their catalogue is proportionately hit and miss to the rest.
Truthfully, if given a choice right now, I would probably reach for Sunny Day Real Esate from that era over any of those big shooters, but that's laregly due to not paying attention to them at that time and not being bored with them like I am those other bands (from over play).
In today's Seattle landscape, I liek Pedro The Lion, but hands down the best they have (and my current overall fave band) is Minus The Bear. Top fucking shelf.

but Superunknown left such a bad taste in my mouth with its warmed over Led Zep-wannbe clichés that it kinda soured me on the band forever - and god I hated Black Hole Sun! Yeah, well that's described Black Hole Sun and maybe 2 other tracks on the album. I love that album and I have no love for either Led Zep or Black Hole Sun, believe me. Being as I sold the album 11 years ago or something, I really can't remember specific songs beyond Black Hole Sun since that song was frickin everywhere. (And by the way, not only did I hate that song, but I also loathed the ridiculously overrated and annoying video!) All I know is that I listened plenty of times to the entire album and found it pretty much lacking in redeeming qualities throughout. I'm loving the Melvins love on this thread, by the way.

I voted for Mudhoney. Because they deserve at least one vote, and they rocked considerable ass.
