I've heard plenty, and I do mean PLENTY of the Smiths and I just don't see what's so great about 'em. Elliott Smith gets my pick easily. He's one of my favorite songwriters. "The Boy With the Thorn In His Side" is the only song I could stand beside some of Elliott's better songs. And I can only listen to Morrissey's voice for a given amount of time before I pull my hair out. If that's musical blasphemy, so be it.

Elliot Smith is good but not a match for a band that I grew up with and whose mastery of elegant melodies, sardonic and caustic wit still boggles my mind.

Elliot Smith was quite a talent but I'm going to have to go with Robert Smith on this one.
It goes. 1. Robert Smith 2. The Smiths 3. Mark E. Smith of the Fall (I'm totally WIRED!) 4. Fred "Sonic" Smith from the MC5 5. Adrian Smith from Iron Maiden 6. Chad Smith (RHCP) 7. Elliot Smith

The Smiths.
The Fall is unbelievably undeserving of the praise they often get. They're one of those bands people claim to love but few people actually listen to.

Robert Smith deserves the top slot, that much I can agree with.

I only have one Elliot Smith CD and it's OK, but it didn't resonate for me...
but the Smiths...my, when I bought the debut based on a RS review, I think circa 1983 or so, I was just overwhelmed...and then seeing them on the Meat is Murder tour circa 1985 at Hollywood Palladium...amazing live act, and Johnny Maar's guitar was virtually unparalleled (maybe, as for new wave acts, Peter Buck was a contender)
true their lyrics at times could be a bit self-absorbed (understatement of the century) but I always felt there was some tongue-in-cheek.........

The Smiths > any English band of the last 30 years except maybe Radiohead.
That's the sort of company The Smiths are keeping.
They are widely regarded in the UK as one of our finest achievements in the history of popular music and as the most influential British act of the 80's. They deserve total respect. They do not deserve to be compared with Elliot Smith, for all the decent tunes he wrote. What next? Who do you prefer: The Clash or Seasick Steve? The Beatles or Rufus Wainwright?

The Smiths > The Cure> The Fall... ...but I do like the Fall. I used to listen to This Nation's Saving Grace pretty much constantly when I first acquired it - though it's been a long time, I admit. Maybe I'll bring it in my car when I grocery shopping today...

DED, maybe there are some (usually young) poseurs and pseuds out there who just name-check bands like The Fall and Sonic Youth and MBV just to sound the part. But I think Mark E Smith is pretty deserving of praise nonetheless. Albums like This Nation's Saving Grace and Hex Induction Hour were good enough for John Peel, and they're good enough for me.

I mean yeah there are people who honestly love the Fall, they never did much for me. Giving the brilliant Mr. Peel the benefit of the doubt I have given The Fall ample chance, sure they probably did it first but there's just loads of bands who've done it better. Quite frankly I put the The Fall in the same column I put The Velvet Underground in of being far more influential then they were good. Not that I think either The Fall or VU are bad at any rate, the genius is simply lost on me. I don't much like MBV either, different strokes I suppose.

Holzman, how did you manage to hijack Melon's account and post this nonsense? I'm convinced I've heard you say these very words before. I like the Smiths more than the Cure, but it's not really a fair comparison when you take into account that the Smiths split up before they started to make shitty albums like the Cure did. I love them both though. I don't care about Elliott Smith.
