This is the new Post Punk board where we talk about all of those great post punk bands from PIL all the way to SPK. Name your top five post punk bands for me and we'll discuss the movement and what it means and why new school bands such as the Bravery or Kaiser Chiefs suck such ass.

These picks are kind of typical, but what the hell:
Gang of Four Joy Division The Fall Wire (haven't heard THAT much from them, but what I've heard is fantastic) The Teardrop Explodes

The list may be typical, but they are still great bands. Have you heard the new Wire stuff? That stuff is really good, but personally I'd have to say that "Chairs Missing" is probably my favorite.

It was 25 years ago today that Ian Curtis was found dead of an apparent suicide. JOY DIVISION was THE post-punk band. PiL ranked until Levine split. Wire, A Bell Is A Cup is a great post-punk album. Bauhaus. The Fall.
That's five. Pioneers, though. Then again, you could just about say that ANY rock music made after the punk supernova in 1977-79 might as well be considered "post-punk". Pere Ubu were great.

Tis True, Jackory, so true that the argument could be made that everything after the years 77 to 79 is post punk. But, I believe that those bands do posses a sound that is so dubiously aped these days. I mean, I hear more Section 25 and Tuxedomoon these days in alot of these new bands that I ever have before. I think alot of it has to do with that between 77 to about 85, the music made during that period in the underground was very bizarre and interesting that is only now getting the attention it should have received to begin with.

Man . . . I'm just now catching up with "post-rock" and "post-metal" -! When I get a chance to come up for a gulp of air, I'll start looking into this post-punk stuff. Although I've noticed from folk's lists (the fall, wire, gang of four, PIL, Joy Division, etc) that it seems more "old\classic" bands are being included than bona-fide, NEW bands introducing an actual "post-" genre.
For example: Under the umbrella of "post-rock", you'll find:
Godspeed You!Black Emperor Mogwai Explosions In The Sky etc.
Under the umbrella of "post-metal" you'll find:
ISIS Pelican Red Sparowes etc.
Notice how most (if not all) of these bands are relative "newcomers" to the scene, as opposed to such classic bands as Gang Of Four, PIL, Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Fall, etc.
So my question, re-iterated:
Are there any BRAND NEW bands that would be analogous to POST-PUNK in the same fashion that ISIS & PELICAN are to post-metal and GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR & Explosions In The Sky are to post-rock - ?
OR . . . Is "post-punk" really kind of "seperate" from the aforementioned movements -?

I don't know about other people, but mostly the only bands I call "post-punk bands" are bands that were around from about 1978-1980 and formed after the first wave of punk bands. I don't think there can be any new post punk bands.

That's kinda what I thought. So it's like, way before "post-rock" or "post-metal" came along - the fact is, "punk" already laid claim to the "post-" prefix. Then came along bands such as GY!BE and Isis, and took that label & ran with it, leaving punk choking in their dust going "WTF?"
Perhaps it's time to form a true "post-punk" band, one for the 21st century. .. .

"post-rock" and "post-metal" (especially the latter) are rarely used or "official" genre names though, and they're based in part on the post-punk term. Post-Rock is basically a way of calling a band "space rock" while trying to distance them from prog, while "post metal" is effectively a way of calling a drone metal/doom metal band such without invoking images of Candlemass or Sabbath. They're both basically cop outs.
