I know it'll be hard to pick for some and that this might not include everyone's favorite. But I got a little help from Phil here so hopefully most folks' favorite is on here. I just ordered In A Silent Way. Can't wait to get it. The only Davis I've ever heard is the Essential MD, Kind Of Blue and On the Corner. I was just wondering which would win here.

Kind of Blue. Not that the rest of Miles' catalog isn't mind-blowing in and of itself, but Kind of Blue is absolutely the best jazz recording. Ever.
(At least, it's one that you can make that claim about and know that at least you're in the right ballpark).

To be honest, I voted for Sketches of Spain. Its CRAZIER than Bitches Brew.--at least to me. I really don't know what Mr. Davis involvement was in it--but its amazing to me. I like Kind Of Blue ok, but there is so much more. Life affirming stuff.
I'm not a huge Jazz expert (im a verse chorus verse whacked out power pop electric guitar soul kinda guy) --but when I do listen to it, Miles Coltane Monk, Kenton--its first thing in the morning. And I remember my first listening to Sketches of Spain. It was almost creepy. Very surreal, Very moving. My second vote goes to Big Fun. That is totally out there. Sure its a whole bunch of outtake tapes thrown together, it works for me. I still remember the first time I heard it, standing in the kitchen, making breakfast for kin not even awake yet....sun coming up...Beautiful stuff.*snif* thats the best time of the day to listen to music, when the sun is coming up....if my lazy ass could do that now....
I am in the John Coltrane's ASCENSION is AMAZING camp--if that gives you any indication. How do you do that?
So, Melon, thanks for the thread. Let us know what you think of "In A Silent Way"

i would agree that sketches of spain is most certainly crazier than bitches brew - but bitches brew will also be the favourite for me. i could listen to pharaoh's dance until i die.

Sketches of Spain is incredible ... Miles and Gil Evans came up with something that was simultaneously both meticulously structured and joyously spontaneous. Probably my second favorite Miles album ... though obviously that's like picking your favorite child or something.
