Here's a few, IMO: Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley The Talking Heads' "Memories Can't Wait" by Living Colour Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man" by Johnny Cash Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" by Johnny Cash Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "The Mercy Seat" by Johnny Cash. Please forgive me, Mary.

The one that really comes to mind is Hendrix's version of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower".
NIN's cover of Soft Cell's "Memorabilia" is pretty bad ass.
This is blasphemy but I kind of like Low's version of Joy Division's "Transmission" a little bit better than the original. Mostly because it was just so different.
This is a great thread!

Ditto on Hendrix's def. version of "Watchtower"
I think Cave's "Mercy Seat" perhaps leans towards the poetic while Cash comes through with drama. His indeed is a stirring read!
I'll throw in Sinead O'Conner's version of Elton John's "Sacrifice" for some reason......

Type O Negative's cover of Cinnamon Girl... it just sounds so fricken cool! Actually their cover of "Daytripper" is something I'd hit repeat for too... and I would only be qable to sit through the original once... :-)

Emmylou Harris' version of Steve Earle's "Goodbye" and Emm Gryner's "Straight to Hell" are a couple that spring to mind right now. Emm's got a few on that album, actually – "Waiting Room", "Crazy Train", "The Day We Hit the Coast" (though I really like the original of the latter, too.)

i just heard (coupla days ago) an alejandro escovedo disc that had a bunch of covers on it, 'more miles than money: 1996-1998' live versions that were largely solo but with a string quartet, a hip string quartet mind you.
i wanna be your dog was ok....but their version of the stones' 'sway' was simply wonderful, bringing out multiple new levels to the genius of the lyrics and of the structure of their composition. no sax break, but a cool concise guitar solo.

The Church do a pretty darn fine cover of "Wide Open Road" by an other Aussie band, the Triffids, on their latest accoustic album offering, El Momento Siguente...
Come to think of it they do a really nice cover of Cortez the Killer on "A Box of Birds" as well...

After just five listens, I'm ready to give the edge to Petra Haden a capella version of the Who's "I can See For Miles" ...
Yep! It's(IMO)that good ...

You really like The Sundays vers. better than The Stones maarts? They DO do it fine but there's something about the almost naselly way Jagger sings it that always appeals to me....that, and that itty-bitty guitar note bend just before the last chorus tumbles out.... Guess I'm getting at that IMO The Stones put a touch on that particular song that make it definative.
