You really like The Sundays vers. better than The Stones maarts? They DO do it fine but there's something about the almost naselly way Jagger sings it that always appeals to me....that, and that itty-bitty guitar note bend just before the last chorus tumbles out.... Guess I'm getting at that IMO The Stones put a touch on that particular song that make it definative. I follow this line of thinking to a T, but maarts hit the nail on the head listing Cowboy Junkies' version of "Sweet Jane". How I fergat that'n I've no idea.

gram parsons actually released his version of wild horses before the stones did. he had access because the junked-out doofus true genius was hangin' wif keef richards. keith did a great job of corrupting the very corruptible gram p.
read that in the notes to a 2-disc gp anthology i just acquired...
wonderful version btw. never heard the sundays' one.

Every one of the Sun Kil Moon covers of Modest Mouse songs are better than the original.
I've tried to get into Modest Mouse. Sorry.
Not to mention Mark Kozeleks covers of AC/DC songs. Every single one of them.
Elton John did a halfway decent version of "Pinball Wizard".
I'll take the Stones' version of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" over the Temptaions anyday. And it may be blasphemous to admit, but I like their "Love in Vain" better than Robert Johnson's.
Aerosmith's "Train Kept-Rollin'" kicked the Yardbirds ass (it was the Yardbirds, wasn't it? The most over-rated band in rock and roll history?).
Sandy Denny's rendition of "The Ballad of Easy Rider" is better than the original.
I liked the Carpenters' "Superstar" better than Leon Russell's original.
I'd rather listen to CCR's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" any time over Marvin Gaye's (though I have much respect for Gaye).
Joy Division's "Sister Ray" over the Velvet Underground's.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Mr. Bojangles" over Jerry Jeff Walker's.
James Taylor's "You've Got a Friend" over Carole King's.
This Mortal Coil's "Song to the Siren" over Tim Buckley's.
Vanilla Fudge's "Season of the Witch" over Donovan's.
That's about all I can think of right now.

I'll second that.

I like the Stones' version odf Wil Horses just fine but Harriet Wheeler's voice is just really sweet and I like the guitar arrangement...played it a lot after I got this on a single.

Not to mention Mark Kozeleks covers of AC/DC songs. Every single one of them. yeah, those were incredible -- esp. "Walk All Over You" that is slowed down almost into a love song. I'll take the Stones' version of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" over the Temptaions anyday. Aerosmith's "Train Kept-Rollin'" kicked the Yardbirds ass (it was the Yardbirds, wasn't it? The most over-rated band in rock and roll history?). Can't agree with you on the Stones' version -- that big old Motown production, great vocals, and sound0thetimes playing is just nailed by the Temps in my book. But then I like Linda Ronstadt's take on "Tumblin' Dice" too....though not enough to put it above Mick & Keef. "Train Kept a'Rollin" was a tune out of the 1940's or '50's by a guy named Tiny Bradshaw. The original is a total upbeat jazzy number and is in itself a good listen. Myself, I'd put it as a tossup between The Yardbirds & Aerosmith's versions. The Yardie's (Jeff Beck in this case) put a great barebones 'clunka-clunka' riff in there that I think is just killer, while Relf puts out this hint of almost dangerous sexuality into the lyric. Aerosmith on the other hand brought some downright sleeze to the proceedings and tacked on the arenarock soloing in the 2nd half of the tune.

In my opinion, most covers are "not as good as" the originals...but some of them take the original and drag it to unimaginable lows.
For instance, David Bowie trashes John Lennon's "Across the Universe" on the "Young Americans" album.
An even better example is Smash Mouth's treatment of the Monkee's Neil Diamond song, "I'm a Believer". That one is a puker.
I'm sure there are many, many more examples of this, surely more than of covers that are better than the original. I'll probably think of many more before the next time I log on, but for now Id like to hear y'alls.
Rondstadt's "Tumbling Dice" is pretty good I got dragged to one of her concerts a long time back and she opened with it. Kinda helped the rest of it go down a little easier. But one thing I will say for her...you may not like the majority of her music (I don't, at least) and you may think her opinions of pop/rock music are full of shit (I do) but there's no denying that she has one of the most powerful voices in all of music.

Bowie's VU covers are better, Pretenders Stop Your Sobbing, Kiss' version of the Stones' 2000 Man, The Clash I Fought The Law, Stevie Wonder's cover of We Can Work It Out is at least as good as the original...

The Jam's "David Watts," the Clash's "Armagideon Time" and "Police and Thieves," the Beatles "Please Mr. Postman," "Twist and Shout," "Long Tall Sally," . . .

I actually love Bowie's rendition of "Across the Universe." It's not up to the best Beatles version (the one from Let It Be . . . Naked), but it's still wonderful. He sings it like he's never heard the original, which IMO really works.

Bangles "Hazy Shade of Winter".
Probably not a popular choice, but that's what I feel.
