Bangles "Hazy Shade of Winter". Probably not a popular choice, but that's what I feel. ^ ^ I can go with that! Nice calls on Clash/"I Fought The Law", Pretenders/"Stop Your Sobbing", Beatles/"Twist & Shout" (which is right there with Hendrix's owning of "Watchtower" as far as taking an cover and making a def. version of it). One cover I can't get into is Metallica's take of "Turn The Page"....about the same goes for "Whiskey In The Jar" in which IMO they lose the spirit of the trad. Irish drinking tune.

Speaking of which, she and Matthew Sweet made a killer cover album together. I could listen to their version of "Different Drum" all day . . .

i thought hetfield's vocal was excellent on their version....so...so hetfield-ish. one of the great rock and roll voices imo. ~ but train kep' a-rollin' also got the honey hush riff down COLD, so which came first? and are they really 2 different songs? i mean 'hi-yo silver' or 'train kept a -rollin'? pretty darned close, eh? ~ Richard Thompson's Season of the Witch is even better than those three ... 2nded. 3rded. passed. amen.

You know, that's one I'd have to poke around and do some research, but off the bat, I KNOW Foghat's version has that same riff going on. I will give you this rock artifact: the Yardbirds did re-tool "Train" with different lyrics for the film Blow-Up due to legal reasons. Known as "Stroll On" it's the only time you get Beck & Page together on lead guitars (and an almost campy bit of Jeff doing a Townsend on his guitar): www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlzSHKx8h5U

As far as I know that Foghat version is the only version of Honey Hush with that riff. Tiny Bradshaw wrote Train in the early 50's around the same time Big Joe Turner wrote Honey Hush. However, the two in those early versions sound nothing alike.

I might catch some hell for this but I really, really like Corgan's version of "Landslide" better than Stevie Nick's. I love Fleetwood Mac's version, but I actually think Corgan's version on Pisces Iscariot is one of the best songs I've ever heard.

I really dig the Bradshaw version of "Train" -- it stands on its own but it's also interesting how a band like the Yardbirds can hear it and seize the essence from it to make a rock standard. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I always like to point out how even The Beatles ripped off Fleetwood Mac somewhat with "Sun King" and it's likeness to Mac's "Albatross"....someone in the band even admitted to this. And then there's of course Judas Priest covering "Green Manalishi" and making a metal classic from it.

All the Metallica tracks I like, I enjoy despite Het's vocals. And that includes their cover of "Whiskey in the Jar."
He always sounds like he's trying too hard, IMO. The guy needs to relax.

I loved Hetfield's old vocals but I'm convinced that since "Load", he's been singing in the crapper through bouts of constipation. I'm with Ken, Hetfield's pretty bogus these days.
To me....Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues" destroys the original.
The Clash's "Police And Thieves" also stomps the original Lee Perry version.

Great seeing you here again, Ken. Don't be such a stranger.. All Metallica covers suck. Just like others covering their songs suck. I loved Hetfield's old vocals but I'm convinced that since "Load", he's been singing in the crapper through bouts of constipation. haha. I've noticed the cries of constipation too. It's like he adds an "aah" at the end of each word for dramatic effect, but just comes off sounding retarded. like... "It Aint My Bitch..aaah." Anyway, the only Metallica worth listening to is old Metallica. They could have split up after the Black album and nothing would be any different. It's like a completely different band now. ...and I have zero expectations for their new upcoming Rubin produced album. It's gonna stink. You just can't go back to great things after sucking for over 15 years.

maybe on this rubin-product hetfield relaxes the way ken wants him too? yeah sure.
which metal band in memory do you feel has a singer who relaxes while singing any sort of believeable convincing metal?
no.
with that form it's all about exploding into the mike.
and if his suffixed 'ah's are a weird affectation, then wtf do you call that muse singer's gasping desperately for air while he sings?
or eddie vedder's nearly uncontrollable nevermind-the-song-context vibrato?
wellll, except for his into the wild soundtrack....

Candy Says - Blind Melon
Sorry, it's just better. Different chords. Totally different song with much, much more feeling.
