Also you're going to think I'm nuts but I saw Hootie and Blowfish play Black Magic Woman once and they tore it up. I couldn't believe it but they really did it right.

I saw Replacements on their Tim tour do a very saracastic, mumbling imitation of REM's "Radio Free Europe"..it really wasn't mean spirited at all, but it was funny as shit!!
And horrible covers: Bowie totally mangled the Beatles 'Across the Universe' on Young Americans...and did same for the stones "Lets' spend the night together' on Alladin Sane......
But he did a sensational cover of VU "Waiting for the Man"
and when he covers songs he co-wrote by Iggy or just songs by Iggy the result is mixed...he did an OK job on "neighborhood threat" and very much sanitized "china girl" but obliterated Bang, Bang and Tonight..............

I have five really great sounding Mats bootlegs. Two shows when they were almost too drunk to play, they run through a hours worth of covers they don't really know (it's rare song, even originals, that they play more then half of) and three when they were gods. Both types of shows have their charm too. Even drunk off their asses the mats were one the greatest worst bands ever.

Always liked Peter Sellers' renditions of the classics.

I was gonna put Tobacco Road, with the 1964 cover by the Nashville Teens as being better than the original by J D Lowdermilk. Then I got to thinking if maybe I liked another cover better, but no. But in looking around, I found this site and page: www.ihesm.com/Go there and scroll down just a bit to the list of songs, then click on Tobacco Road. The list of people who have covered this tune is unbelievable. It's like Johnny B Goode or something. Go check it out! And just as a nod, I've included the original lyrics below. Johnny Winter gave it a good run. I was born in a dump, Mamma died and daddy got drunk, Left me here to die or grow In the middle of Tobacco Road. Wo wo wo Grew up in a rusty shack, All I owned was hangin' on my back. Only you know how I loathe This place called Tobacco Road, But it's home. The only life I've ever known Only you know how I loathe Tobacco Road Gonna leave get a job With the help and the grace from above Save my money get rich I know, Bring it back to Tobacco Road. Wo wo wo Bring dynamite and a crane, Blow it up, start all over again. Build a town, be proud to show, Give the name Tobacco Road But it's home. The only life I've ever known I despise you 'cos you're filthy, But I love you 'cos you're home.

that word 'filthy' has to be sung just right too.
i always thought of tobacco road as a perfect bookend to one of my favorite songs ever, billy joe royal's 'down in the boondocks', though boondocks is a bit of a sweeter sounding song.
rare earth did a killer tobacco road....

Nirvana's "Here She Comes Now" gives me chills (really not my favorite VU song... and WLWH is probably #3 in my VU LP rankings, too). Just really slow and dark but silly, and then when he starts screaming... awww, crap.
There's nothing I love more than Nirvana b-sides... including their wealth of covers (D-7, Return of the Rat, Turnaround, Moist Vagina... etc.). I guess it'd be fun for me to namedrop some lesser knowns here, but... nope. Nirvana's b-sides alone make life worth living (no cheap shot intended against Kurt).

Oh. And The Killing Moon off of Pavement's Major Leagues EP is a melancholic treasure.

I'm going to say it and admit that I actually prefer Nirvana's "Man Who Sold The World" to Bowie's.

Someone asks for some Jackson 5 and the boys pull off a nice "I'll Be There" and I think that one's even almost a complete version. The second side is just chaos --- esp. when the band plays a Black Sabbath tune and Paul is wanting to sing a different one, until it all just dissolves on the floor.

Bow -- I actually really like Bowie's "Across the Universe." He sings it like he's never heard the original, and in some sections like he has no idea what it's supposed to mean.

Was listening to the iPod on shuffle whilst walking the dogs tonight . . . when up comes SRV's heart-breaking rendition of "Little Wing." Wowsers.
Best. Cover. Ever. (I think).
