Aw, go listen to some Led Zeppelin!
There are so few people who dislike the Allmans, but they are usually over exposed to "Ramblin' Man" and "Midnight Rider" and under exposed to the rest of the catalog.
I noticed a fair mix of Betts to Allman tunes in those just listed. You can't deny Betts' importance, even if he is an asshole. I would add Jessica to the list of definitive tunes.
Highway 61 Revisited -- Dylan / Johnny Winter

The Dreams box set is one of the best collections out there IMO...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" - Isley Brothers doing James Taylor with soooooo much more soul and pity.
"Black Betty" - Nick Cave wharfsman take of the old Leadbelly tune makes you forget all about what Ram Jam did to it in the 70's.
"Jealous Guy" - Brian Ferry racheted up the plea factor with Roxy Music's live take on this Lennon classic...I think his whistling was better too.
"My Generation" - Patti Smith live with John Cale spit the Who tune out with pure bitterness & spite with the band fuckin' rocking behind her.
"Black Diamond" - The Replacements make a Kiss chestnut sound even more bare --- I love the moment a split second before the heavy guitar chord slams in when you can hear a band member take in a BIG sniff.
oh,,,,and with all the Allman talk, let me toss out one undisputable HELLUVA cover Duane was involved with:
"Loan Me A Dime" - a short Fenton Robinson ditty that Boz Scaggs pulled the one Allman bro into the studio to lay down jusssst a little guitar onto... Wanna talk cover??? THERE ya go!
Why on earth would I want to forget what Ram Jam did to Black Betty?
I'll have to look for that cover of Black Diamond, Don. Even the first time around, back in the day when I was ridiculing KISS as being neanderthals only slighty ahead of disco on the evolutionary scale, that tune got some respect from me. Strutter and Slo Gin were also guilty pleasures.
I like the Cardigans version of "Iron Man", but it's not better than the original so I dunno why I mentioned it. Just felt like it so frickin' deal with it!
Well, that's the thing: there are so many covers that are NOT as good as the original...
You know, I have never really cared for "Iron Man" -- has to be the worst song on Paranoid (IMO) yet it's the one tune every mullethead with a black t-shirt will jump up out of his chair for and pump his fist in the air. Iommi cuts a great solo in it but that riff & Ozzy's measured singing just don't do it for me.
(btw: I'm not pegging anyone here as having a shag cut or pack of Marlboro's rolled up in there sleeve or anything.......)
On the other side of the coin: I'll have to look for that cover of Black Diamond, Don. Even the first time around, back in the day when I was ridiculing KISS as being neanderthals only slighty ahead of disco on the evolutionary scale, that tune got some respect from me. Strutter and Slo Gin were also guilty pleasures. I just burnt a 2CD set of Kiss tunes for a buddy and ended up making a copy for my own self after I played it back. Simplistic or not (ok, they are), this was a fun band in the early days and they could roll out a cranker or two. Gawd, it'd seemed like decades since I listened to "She" or "100,000 Years" off of Alive.1....even "I Was Made For Loving You" has got its own good thing going! That Replacements' cover of "Black Diamond" is on their Let It Be album Jeff....one that I played endlessly.
I like the Turtles "It Aint Me Babe" and Hendrix version of "All Along the Watchtower" other than that I really cannot think of any covers that are better than the original right now....I don't like covers.
