I didn't know Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy was a compilation. Well I'm just now hearing Quadrophenia (thanks Glenn!!) so I probably shouldn't vote here. BUT, I'm so absolutely positive that nothing is going to beat Live At Leeds for me, I'm voting for it.

Well, I'm not an aficionado by any means but Who's Next is my choice.

I'm not really either when it comes to the Who, but when it comes to live albums, I can't really say I've ever heard any band do a better one.

On the fence with Leeds and Quad but had to go with the latter with the thought that it's an example of their planned out creativity and message therein while the former is Niagra over the falls!

I love the Who.
There is no way to vote fairly here. WHOS NEXT rules the rock and roll universe whenever I put it on. Theres no excuse for WHOS NEXT being so kick ass.
Quadrophenia is head to head with Whos Next.
By Numbers, however needs some love. I voted for it. Cos people ignore it or haven't heard it. Its a hard album to find too, at least it was for me. "How Many Friends" "Slip Kid" "However Much I booze" "Imagine a Man" "Dreaming from the Waist" Its direct dooming middle aged lyrics hit me like a freight train when I first heard it when i was in my early twenties. Sure its not Quadrophenia, or Whos Next. But Im voting for it! BY NUMBERS AWARENESS SOCIETY HAS FORMED!
(theres no way I could vote on a favortite who album anyway)

Best Who album . . . geesh, this is both insanely easy and excrutiatingly hard.
Who's Next is, by any reasonable observation or criteria, not only their best album, but one of the five best records in the history of the universe. Or at least in the rock era. Not a weak track on it, some of the best playing and production in the biz, and the absolutely perfect summation of politics in the twentieth century ("meet the new boss, same as the old boss"). So that's what I voted for.
But then again, there's Tommy, and The Who Sell Out (the best concept album from "the year of the concept album" [1967], and so much more fully realized than Sgt. Pepper that it isn't even funny), both of which are very nearly as good. Quadrophenia tried to combine the scope of Tommy with the sound of Who's Next, and while it didn't quite suceed, it's still a fascinating failure.
And then there's The Who By Numbers, which is not a model of accessibility, but which is one of the deepest meditations on the star system, fame, fortune and failure to every hit the airwaves. This is a great album, and all the more remarkable for the fact that it is extremely personal and revealing, but it's still very much the product of a four-man band.
For that matter, Who Are You very nearly answers the questions posed on By Numbers, and does so in a commanding fashion which somehow manages to combine elements of punk, disco, and stadium bombast with the band's by now signature production in one of the greatest statements of rock and roll maturity (if there is such a thing) from the band who once sang "hope I die before I get old."
Best Who album? How can you live without any of them?
Right now, they're my favorite band of the sixties and early seventies. Even over the Beatles. (gasp!)

Oh, man, yeah this is fairly unanswerable, yet easy at the same time. I agree with Ken's take, in large part. And the short answer is: Who's Next. But there's so much more to say...
For my part, I AM a huge lover of their work and a long-time aficionado. That's no secret around these here parts. It is my opinion that the Who are the greatest rock and roll band of all time, bar none. I feel that they best epitomize the most of the entire rock and roll genre: sound, era, feel, point, look, behavior, etc, in a single band. If you had to pick a single band. Their music has also been a huge influence in my own music and attitude. Not the only one, but maybe the biggest one. And if I had to pick only one band's catalog with which to be stranded on a desert island with, it would be the Who's. (Isn't that a thread here somewhere?)
It was Tommy that first made me really aware of the awesomeness and potential of music. I first heard it when I was about 13. I listened to it from beginning to end, in awe. I became aware of the intervals and power of music then for the first time. Harmonies, discord, melody, dynamics, timing -- all the elements of music took form for me at that time. It would be another 5 years or so before I would pick up a guitar (too intimidated to try to actually learn before - it's so magical it must be too hard for me to do) and really learn the meanings and sounds of the subtleties -- 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 7ths, 9ths, etc.
I returned to Tommy many times, and it never disappointed. I was like Tommy himself in "Amazing Journey" -- just put on the headphones and the music always had more to teach me. So, yeah, it's a favorite for me.
And there are many other great Who albums that are mentioned here: Quad for sure, By Numbers, many more. But too many others have written too many excellent pieces on Who's Next for me to presume to do so here and now. I will spare you the essay at this time. Suffice it to say that I concur. The answer is Who's Next, for a plethora of reasons, many of which most folks here probably already know.
Can you see the real me? Can you?

Good one, ded! Thanks, man. I really did mean what I wrote, though. Long Live Rock!

Just a little poke at you, wayved and ken. I love every single Who album, but I have to give Who's Next a substantial lead. IMO it really is that great, it's just phenomenal in every way. As much as I love the other albums Who's Next is the only one I can call perfect.
