18. Mutemath-s/tI'm so glad that we finally have a band who can evolve into The Police on just one album From the Ghost in The Machine instrumentals to the never ending hooks of just a really well written pop rock songs if the year was 1994 these guys would dominate your local alternative frequency because they are the alternative to everything out right now a live show where members of the band can trade off instruments a passion to prove they are a force, and even a sneaky sense of arrogance that they know their really good check out this performance from Jimmy Kimmel www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiNRWdFMsb0&feature=relatedwhich was based on the best music video of 2007 www.youtube.com/watch?v=b13rc6DY74AKEYGUITAR!!!! somewhere Peter Gabriel must be proud but if it was just their creativity that would be cool but there's so much depth to their music From the pulse of " Chaos" to the pandemonium of "Control"Everything seems to have a purpose and damd does it sound like a band who enjoys putting the pieces together Standout Track "Control"- The launching point of a rocket in the intro and one of the best hidden love songs that kicks more ass than a UFC fighter on the juice one of the best songs of 2006 and if it's released as a single will make them a massive success Take control of the atmosphere Take me far away from here There is no better loss than to lose myself in you In a parachute to glide, I am captive in your sky Surrender has somehow become so beautiful
Take control of the atmosphere Take control of the atmosphere You can take my world you can fill the air Take control, take control
It's such a beautiful surrender It's such a beautiful surrender It's such a beautiful surrender It's such a beautiful surrender
Move me up through the darkest clouds Till I've lost in the sun every shadow of doubt There is no better find than to find myself with you In a fog you are all I see I'm inviting you closer with each time I breathe Surrender has somehow become so beautiful
Take control of the atmosphere Take control of the atmosphere There is no reason I should breathe unless you're in the air Take control
Its such a beautiful surrender Its such a beautiful surrender And I'm calling out would you take control And I'm calling out

17. Elbow-Leaders of The Free WorldTalk about a band who keeps getting better each new release all it takes to know this is "Forget Myself" never has an elbow song sounded so awake and alive as you can just visualize a late night out stumbling around your hometown on a really nice Friday night of consumption songs like "The Stops"/"An Imagined Affair"/"My Very Best"/"Great Expectations" are those slow fireplace logs that Elbow does so well when your awake the next morning with a really bad hangover from the night before Without any doubt this was my favorite rainy day in bed album released in 06 Elbow finally moved past the Coldplay/Radiohead comparsions at least for me on this one oh how can you not love the title track which takes complete aim at the powers that be with a mature point of view But the leaders of the free world Are just little boys throwing stones And it's easy to ignore Till they're knocking on the door of your homesAMEN brother Standout Track "Great Expectations"- Yours was the face with a grace From a different age You were the sun in my Sunday morning You were the sun in my Sunday morning Telling me never to go So I'll live on the smile And move down the isle Of the last bus home And if you're running late This is where I'll goHeartbreaking

16. Shiny Toy Guns- We Are PilotsYou may actually know some of their music but just don't know the band name www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1DNoPkE0uswhich is course from this world famous ad www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4nxT0F_EIs&feature=related Inside We Are Pilot's liner notes there are the words Version 3.0, alluding to the fact that this major label debut by Shiny Toy Guns is in fact the third incarnation of this album (two different demo versions being released previously)- from their websiteWhich in my opinon is why this is such a first rate dance/pop-rock album in the vein of my beloved Garbage. I have a theory of why debut albums sometimes are a band's best work and We Are Pilot's success is included in that thought Bands in the begining tend to agonize over every fresh new song they create to the point of they can keep re-working arrangements/lyrics for years in this way,but then they have a album and fall into the pressure of the business to keep meeting deadlines and just keep churning out product to meet quotas so they rush thru the recording process and don't really get the chance to perfect their work until they play it live for a peroid of time STG took 4 yrs to make the same album 3x but kept tweaking each little nusiance to the point of they found their formula Boy/Girl take turns singing lead and background add dance ready chorus blend the Killers/Human League/Garbage/and the pop chops of Duran Duran if you wanted to be a jerk, you could call it Hot Fuss 1.5-new wave will have it's revenge Every Song is the best dance pop song that should be played in the clubs. It's not the most original album of 2006 but i could give a large piece of humble pie covered in shit it's just a tremendous execution of the new wave playbook an album I didn't expect much from when a promo copy came across my desk Carah Faye(yes she's verysexy) Sounds like the punk version of Neko Case on "Don't Cry Out" www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbJfuQnnBfY&feature=relatedand the dude who sings Chad Petree didn't forget his playbook either on high falseto "You Are the One"www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxbWaMzsnJo&feature=relatedI just hope they don't go all Wham/Culture Club on me on the next one Standout Track "Waiting" song speaks for itself as the best new order ballad that never was www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNpNyk3AmcQ

15. Thom Yorke- The EraserPeople always use phrases like alienation/isolation to describe Radiohead albums but there's only one problem with that Most of the time Radiohead songs are reaching for communication and to express the need to break free For me the essential Radiohead song that defines this argument is "Let Down"an example of a shut in who only find happieness in small doses till one day he decides he's going to break free and the chemical reaction imo applies to his new idenity he's created So it's with that in mind i find "The Eraser" to be Thom Yorke's sdk to the dark alley of his mind. As i can picture our hero in an attic pounding the keys on his laptop completely in exile from the rest of a world that is spining out of control Yorke becomes the one profession I would speculate he would pursue without an music aspirations A paranoia agent someone who seeks out the supernatual to help define their own purpose as a messenger The Eraser is the search for peace within his soul Analyse so well used as the end credit song to Christopher Nolan's The prestige is the trap door that you never see As the next 2 songs The Clock/Black Swan take you to places that Thom Yorke doesn't really wanna go but he's gotta get out of his system. His family is waiting downstairs, he must be free of these thoughts and views when he plays with his kids The Eraser is the last of Thom the young frustrated man who who wrote Creep/Vegetable/High N Drythis is his therapy as you listen as he lays on the couch and unloads the final chapters of Fears(state of the enviornment, war, depression) Harrowdown Hill arrives Don't walk the plank like I did You will be dispensed with When you've become inconvenient In the harrowdown hill Where you went to school That's where I am That's where I'm lying down
Did I fall or was I pushed? Did I fall or was I pushed? And where's the blood? And where's the blood?
I'm coming home I'm coming home To make it all right So dry your eyes
We think the same things at the same time We just cant do anything about it
So don't ask me Ask the ministry Don't ask me Ask the ministry
We think the same things at the same time There are so many of us So you can't count
We think the same things at the same time There are too many of us So you can't count
Can you see me when I'm running? Can you see me when I'm running? Away from them
I can't take their pressure No one cares if you live or die They just want me gone They want me gone
I'm coming home I'm coming home To make it all right So dry your eyes
We think the same things at the same time We just cant do anything about it
We think the same things at the same time There are too many of us So you can't count
It was a slippery slippery slippery slope It was a slippery slippery slippery slope I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness I feel me slipping in and out of consciousnessThe chemical Reaction has just taken place mentioned in Let Down 9 yrs ago for Thom Mentally he's ready to move on now go listen to In Rainbows and see if i'm wrong Daddy loves us Standout Track- Harrowdown Hill

14. Bruce Springsteen- the Seeger SessionsBruce never wanted to be nothing more than a folk singer life was always rough growing up so the future Boss he needed heroes Bob Dylan/Carl Perkins/Frank Sinatra and it would appear Pete Seeger. This album was not a let's just do a covers record because I'm bored nor was it I gotta fufill my record contract commitments This was a dream from a small town kid who thought "One day i'm gonna be a big star and i'm going to pay tribute to the man who inspired me to pick up a guitar" No album in 2006 felt as loose, but the dvd proves Bruce spent a lot of time and effort changing out arrangements till he was satisfied. The funny thing is I had no idea who Pete Seeger was except that i read Bob Dylan drove cross-country just to me his idol before he passed. But you know all the songs already From "Old Dan Trucker"/"John Henry"/"Pay Me Money Down"I don't believe in past lives but listening to these ole freedom fighter ditties that shaped the myths and dreams we built this country on, i felt like i've been here before It became so obvious why Bruce make this album for right now He's always a defender of the IDEA of what makes America great he can always find TRUTH in the heart of the society Bruce is a real live G.I. Joe carrying the flag we fought so hard to perserve during Pete Seeger's era Bruce never forgot the sacrifice to speak out during those times I salute him for making a great drinking record for all and reminding me what folk music roots were all about Standout Track "We Shall Overcome"- The real Born In The USA anthem

13. The Mars Volta- AmputechtureThe most difficult Mars Volta opus dei- A personal Prelature of the Catholic Church that helps ordinary people seek holiness in their work and everyday activities.
Prelature-A high-ranking member of the clergy, especially a bishopgood now that your scracthing your head like a cartoon character we can talk about the latest Mars Volta Latin Jazz/Latin Jazz/Latin Jazz that's what i hear the most on this earth music they made they left the other universe space time travel sound behind no this is Omar's attempt to build a Miles Davis free form jazz album with guitar and Cedric abstrat lyrics (does he have any other type) but the only downside is that without structure this album is not for everyone i could play Deloused/ or 2005's #1 album for me Frances The Mute for just about anyone this however NOT SO MUCH You must be patient and have a sense of adventure or this will destroy your faith in the album concept but the genuis is still there Vicarious Atonement is the opener of openers so far for MV it just keeps building until the birth of Tetragrammaton (16 min) Viscera Eyes is the closest to a convential rock song and it includes a banjo, and boy how do i love it so From here on I HAVE NO IDEAL WHAT THEY WILL DO NEXT Acid Jazz/Latin Guitar with songs sung in Spanish feature most of the album. The only reason it's not ranked higher is i guess I miss the story apsect of the last 2 but what's that's you say **warning... plug** Jan 29 2008 The genesis of The Mars Volta's new album The Bedlam in Goliath is a tale of long-buried murder victims and their otherworldly influence, of strife and near collapse, of the long hard fight to push "the record that did not want to be born" out into the world. Omar was in a curio shop in Jerusalem when he found the Soothsayer, an archaic Ouija-style "talking board." Had he known at that moment that the board's history stretched far beyond its novelty appearance, that its very fibers were soaked through with something terribly other, that the choral death and desire of a multi-headed Goliath was waiting behind its gates... well, he might have left it at rest there on the dusty shelves. The Upside of That Choice: No bad mojo unleashed. Erase the madness that followed. Erase the bizarre connection to a love/lust/murder triangle that threatened to spill out into the present every time the band let its fingers drift over the board. The Downside: No Soothsayer means The Bedlam in Goliath never would have existed. And it turns out that this demented spiritual black hole of a muse has driven The Mars Volta to produce a crowning moment in their already stellar career. The band names this Ouija board "The Soothsayer", as it offers them a story: It's always about a man, a woman, and her mother. About the lust floating between them. About seduction and infidelity. And pain. And eventually, murder. Entrails and absence and curses and oblivion. There I feel much better Standout Track- Viscera Eyes- it's got the greatest banjo solo

12. Hot Chip- The WarningHot Chip made a "cute" debut album that all the really nerdy/geeky music lovers dug But i went yeah it's ok but where's THE DANCE MUSIC? The Warning was just what it a warning to all who listen you will make complete fools of yourself Over/Over is the dance track of 2006 every club i know where people REALLY DO DANCE played it well Over/Over The Boy from School gives me flashbacks of sitting on the schoolbus wearing headphones bobing my head while all the kids would point and laugh as i made a spectacle of the ride Careful makes Timbaland jealous he can't even make something so funky It's rare a dance album slow jams can steal the spotlight from you just waiting for a fast track to boogie to Colors/Look After You are just those jams Hot Chip on their 2nd album made a greatest hits collection of singles and now will have a lot of pressure on their shoulders to repeat thus the nature of a good time act keep the party going with The Warning they did that more than you could imagine and found their identity somewhere between The Postal Service/Junior Boys and Prince Dance Music for everyone but wallflowers want that check out the debut Standout Track-"Over/Over"- cowbells/speak n spell vocals and this one line ("Like a monkey with a miniature cymbal/The joy of repetition really is in you")

11. Arctic Monkeys-Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not The band that launched a million MYSPACE album record deals the torchcarriers of Brit-Pop This generation's Oasis The latest Franz Ferdinand to conquer America all these things have been said at nauseum the truth is it's a very talented songwriter Alex Turner who speaks to today's youth abouth the same problems That Noel and Damon did for my generation we needed a band that fit our personality I was a hellrasier with an elitetist attitude about life who liked to get fucked up and complain about girls in my life at 16 oasis and blur spoke to me Arctic Monkeys singles are undeniable adolescent fun From I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor line about No time for Montagues or Capulets/Just banging tunes and DJ sets,"I get sucked right back into the that 16 yr old little punk i use to be every single song fits the demo Dancing Shoes feels like a strange new journey into a unfamilar club miles from home It's a smartass' favorite album lyrically "I've seen your frown and it's like looking down the barrel of a gun"- Nardy Bumbut not until Riot Van do you realize your dealing with a little more than children's hope and dreams So up rolls a riot van And sparks excitement in the boys But the policemen look annoyed Perhaps these are ones they should avoid
Got a chase last night From men with truncheons dressed in hats We didn't do that much wrong Still ran away though for the laugh Just for the laugh And please just stop talking Cause they won't find us if you do Oh those silly boys in blue Well they won't catch me and you
Have you been drinking, son You don't look old enough to me I'm sorry, officer Is there a certain age you're supposed to be Cause nobody told me
And up rolls the riot van And these lads just wind the coppers up They ask why they don't catch proper crooks They get their address and their names took But they couldn't care less
Got thrown in a riot van, and the coppers kicked him in, and there was no way he could win, just had to take it on the chin.Sometimes you gotta live the life to write about it ok my turn for a bad analogy What the Arctic Monkeys are to young soccer hooligans the Spice Girls are to little girls Standout Track "Riot Van"

TOP 1010. And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead- So DividedIf I was in a band this is the band i would make the most logical sense for me to play in If you care I'd be the second drummer Conrad Kelly is not just a musical genuis, but a painter he does all the amazing artwork that you get with each trail release, philosopher- on the World's Apart dvd he included a 24 page disertation on how the music industry is falling apart and how to fix it the albums open with people in a restaurant/bar chatering till the guitars and piano hit Trail holds your attention for the next hour with the epic soundscapes and impassioned wails of Conrad and Jason Reece the gore of Source Tags/Codes has been replaced with quiet restraint of a band finding new ways to drive you to hit the repeat button just so you could comprehend what you just heard. Conrad lyrics always cause for pause in interpetations much like sophisticated hip hop I had a house on a rock I turned around and it had gone to rot All that was left of me were walls of doubt I asked a question but the world returned with silence All that I wanted to know is where'd everyone else go?
I had a dad, I had a mom I had a family, don't know what went wrong I watched them helpless as their blood turned sour Wanted to scream for them but had to stand in silence All that I wanted to know is where'd everyone else go?
I had a band, had a song I had a vision, where's my vision gone? I turned inside to find the walls of doubt My mind was stripped of sound, I had to stand in silence All that I wanted to know is where'd everyone else go? -Stand In SilenceIt's seem to me to be a statement to those who have deserted the band after Source. The brilliance missed is a shame for those who sleep on this album So Divided is the ultimate kiss of to a lover, which recaptures the power of World's Apart ability to layer instruments onto instrument till the balnce collapses You know I've heard you say that I'm not real I know you think that I don't understand Truth is I'm trying hard to deal this is not what I had planned It's not that I don't care It's not that I don't love you It's just that I am here To put you out of your misery8 days a week by-way of the Beatles in Conrand's world becomes 8 days of hell the catchiest beach boys jam of the year and tells the story of a band tour gone to hell because of a longing for someone far away Wasting away the better part of the day In the bus on the docks of the UK We walked down the street on that all Hallows Eve But couldn't wait to get back to the US of A
The torture of eight days straight Without sight of your face is so frightening Hoping to make it straight Or find signs of a bite that won't fade like poison
In London we played half an hour a day For a house full of neds who are wanting us dead In Glasgow and Leeds we find signs of relief An escape from our grief with a fistful of E's
Eight day hell You're in an eight day hell This is a deep informed attempt to take indie rock and create a masterpiece hell it's even got the best GBV cover ever Gold Heart Moutaintop Queen DirectoryTrail took the best of Source and Worlds and make something rather unique that deserves to be appreciated I know i do even if i'm the only one Standout Track "Wasted State of Mind" youtube.com/watch?v=wxCD93nTziE&feature=related

9. Bob Dyaln- Modern TimesA living legend is such a special person to listen to and cherish 65 yr olds don't usually don't make the best country album of the year But that's just what happened in 2006 call the music what you will but it's Dylan's best country stack of songs since Nashville SkylineIt's pure americana as only dylan could convey blues/tennessee soul/country on a time machine to 1950 The Levee's Going Break is the sad sick twist of Highwater from Love/Theft coming to finish the job he started back on that faithful day in September 2001 If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break Everybody saying this is a day only the Lord could make
Well, I worked on the levee, Mama, both night and day I worked on the levee, Mama, both night and day I got to the river and I threw my clothes away
I paid my time and now I'm good as new, I paid my time and now I'm as good as new. They can't take me back unless I want 'em to
If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break Some of these people gonna strip you of all they can take
I can't stop here I ain't ready to unload I can't stop here I ain't ready to unload Riches and salvation can be waiting behind the next bend in the road
I picked you up from the gutter and this is the thanks I get I picked you up from the gutter and this is the thanks I get You say you want me to quit ya, I told ya, 'No, not just yet.'
Well, I look in your eyes, I see nobody other than me I look in your eyes, I see nobody other than me I see all that I am and all I hope to be
If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break Some of these people don't know which road to take
When I'm with you, I forget I was ever blue When I'm with you, I forget I was ever blue Without you there's no meaning in anything I do
Some people on the road carryin' everything that they own Some people on the road carryin' everything they own Some people got barely enough skin to cover their bones
Put on your cat clothes, mama, put on your evening dress Put on your cat clothes, mama, put on your evening dress Few more years of hard work, then there'll be a 1,000 years of happiness
If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break I tried to get you to love me, but I won't repeat that mistake
If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break Plenty of cheap stuff out there and still around that you take
I woke up this morning, butter and eggs in my bed I woke up this morning, butter and eggs in my bed I ain't got enough room to even raise my head.
Come back, baby, say we never more will part Come back, baby, say we never more will part Don't be a stranger with no brain or heart
If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break Some people still sleepin', some people are wide awake It's a love song to classic music gone by When The Deal Goes Down is the best written Dylan love song in years it's gives that classic happy ot be in love feeling or at least make you long for past memories of love In the still of the night, in the world's ancient light Where wisdom grows up in strife My bewildering brain, toils in vain Through the darkness on the pathways of life Each invisible prayer is like a cloud in the air Tomorrow keeps turning around We live and we die, we know not why But I'll be with you when the deal goes down
We eat and we drink, we feel and we think Far down the street we stray I laugh and I cry and I'm haunted by Things I never meant nor wished to say The midnight rain follows the train We all wear the same thorny crown Soul to soul, our shadows roll And I'll be with you when the deal goes down
Well, the moon gives light and it shines by night When I scarcely feel the glow We learn to live and then we forgive O'r the road we're bound to go More frailer than the flowers, these precious hours That keep us so tightly bound You come to my eyes like a vision from the skies And I'll be with you when the deal goes down
Well, I picked up a rose and it poked through my clothes I followed the winding stream I heard the deafening noise, I felt transient joys I know they're not what they seem In this earthly domain, full of disappointment and pain You'll never see me frown I owe my heart to you, and that's sayin' it true And I'll be with you when the deal goes down If that doesn't convince just how great a Dylan Album this is I can't Standout Track- "When The Deal Goes Down"

8. !Forward Russia- Give Me A WallDon't read any further if your unfamilar with this band until you watch the video please youtube.com/watch?v=goZC__sHYjkOk now you know why i like this band so much or you think they"re just another dance punk band or worse an emo clone I find them charming and passionate about recreating Gang of Four for this generation. you know the kids who you grew up with who drank ices/slush puppies/suicides(mixing every soda you got in one cup) all day and would spazz out that's Forward Russia, who aren't from Russia, but England of course. They also don't believe in song titles instead they just numbers take that Dave Matthews youtube.com/watch?v=SNnoSngf8qI&feature=relatedbut this is my favorite track on the album that's a single version song is actually 8 min long the vocals are killer, the track is completely engrossing it's an album full of over the top production and chorus which during 2006 was something i really was looking for in music The absolute dance rock album of 2006 Monster + Red Bull + Vodkia= Instant Heart Attack Give me a Wall is the kind album after you would make it/tour for it,you then take 3 yrs off to recover I know I need a day off if i listen more than once late night Standout Track- "Nineteen"

7. The Dears- Gang Of LosersSomebody had to make that emotional rock record that could make large theaters full of people cry i saw it i kid you not in 2006 Murray lightburn took his Morrissey obession as far as ol Moz has ever pushed the boundries of personal songs and cloak/dagger political statements It begins in earnest with a synth track before the best Dears song begins yet Ticket To Immortality where Murray pledges to newborn baby The world is really gonna love you, The world is really gonna love you
I promise you, just like I do.The main reason The Dears get away with such sentiment is Murray's HONESTY he'll tell you as soon he's had enough of the world and when he sings YOU FEEL IT on No Cities Left despair and reserved hate flew alongside 12 min epics that sound so big The Dears had to book big orchestras to put across the message live What makes Gang of Losers such a triumph is this the optimistic and redemption that was missing on No Cities Hate Then Love is the perfect example of this Murray demands that most of the world is fake and the decides to not care as long as he's happy This is what has been missing in The Dears music as grand as it is HAPPINESS ;D ;D Standout Track- Hate Then Love

6. The Hold Steady- Boys and Girls In AmericaThe best bar band in America keeps getting better This was a grower I like the first 2 albums so much that it took at least 6 months before i realized it was their best work It's not because of the songs The Hold Steady have yet to make a song i didn't like some are just much more memorable than others youtube.com/watch?v=xm4hqZuKr_gNo one right nowmakes those give you chills rock songs right before the bridge the way they do Chips Ahoy/Hot Soft Light/First Night are all you need and a 6 pack when your drinking with friends at the house I can't ever seem to say anything negative about the band except if you don't like craig finn's delivery you miss out on some of the best classic rock music being made today don't talk shit about the hold steady to one of their fans it's like talking to a Metalica/Tool fan what more could you want? Standout Track- I can never pick a favorite but right now if i could pick a song to listen to it's Southtown Girlsyoutube.com/watch?v=K1jJaaIfams&feature=related

5. Girl Talk - Night Ripper The PARTY Album of the year by way of my old backyard Pittsburgh Pa You couldn't escape the first true mash-up masterpiece mash-up's have been mixtape staples for me for years but Greg Gillis took it to another level by building the most expansive mixes you have heard Not a single person won't recognize at least 1 song he samples It's even a fun little game to listen and pick out the samples that's Nas/ That's Weezer/ oh shit that's 2 live crew it never ends unless you seek out the entire mix listing on wikapedia. I won't post that to ruin the mystrey though Any aspiring producer has attempted to slam mix upon mix but Gillis finds a way to push 13 songs into one track with the segway into the next never slows down and it's seemless you won't ever even notice the track's changed your favorite band didn't sue him because they knew this wasn't stealing like say a Puff Daddy sample This was a piece of ART and nobody has dupicalted it yet
