"...And let us not forget Pink Floyd, who went so far as to literally construct a wall between themselves and their audience, while performing live."
that's one of the coolest things i ever heard.
only floyd album i own is dark side of the moon, but i think it's the most brilliant record of all-time, far and away. rock record, anyway.

But Canada and England also have free speech, and appear to be far less diametrically polarized than the U.S. So it seems like there must be some additional explanation beyond free speech for this polarization. I never blamed free speech for the polarization. I simply said that I see the polarization as proof that the rhetoric claiming free speech is being squelched is false.

I concur with that sentiment wholeheartedly.
(I intend to purchase the new 30-yr Anniversary Edition of DSOTM on vinyl, replete w/original poster + stickers)

I think you both need to listen to more music.

i was gonna pick up that new edition, but i've heard that, for whatever reason, it's just not as good as the one before it... *shrugs*. i know that, with the first few shipments, a bunch of 'em broke very easily.

Sad that the one who gives props to the greatest album of all time (by calling it just that) has "Bush=Murder" on their profile.

Well, it's one thing for VU or Pink Floyd to have contempt for their audience (if indeed they do/did, which I doubt, backs turned, walls built or whatever)...But we're talking about Linda Ronstadt here. Where would she be without her audience? I mean, she doesn't write her own songs, she doesn't play an instrument. Yeah, she's got a fairly powerful voice, but no more so than any other female vocalist who rose to prominence in the 70's... If she hadn't struck a chord with a certain audience (an audience she currently disowns and insults) she would not have had a career, and that's the bottom line. Her audience made her the star she became (not to take away from Warren Zevon, Elvis Costello, Jagger/Richards, Chuck Berry and any of the other fine writers whose songs she pilfered before she "outgrew" them), and that includes a lot of us fuddy-duddy Christians and Republicans (who, until now, had no idea were so high on her personal list of annoyances). In other words, Linda Ronstadt would be nothing without the loyal fans who have supported her throughout the years. And yet she treats them with utter contempt in her remarks to the press. Forget that she thinks Michael Moore is a patriot worthy of dedicating one of her biggest hits to (alas, one she had absolutely no hand in composing)...Soon enough she'll learn that it doesn't pay in show business (to the extent that she's used to getting paid, at least) to bite the hands that feed you...
But hey, enough already about that. Prison time for Sandy Berger? I say "Yay"...any dissenting opinions?

And here I was all this time thinking that "Bush=Murder" was an indictment of the band whose debut album was Sixteen Stone... Ah, well. Radicalism is and always has been chic. I suppose "Truman=Murder" as well...

Someone needs to tell Linda Ronstadt that Las Vegas is not the place for political activism. People come to Las Vegas to GET AWAY FROM ALL THAT for just a little while.
I think people forget that people live in Vegas. Over a million people. People with just as many politics as anywhere else. If she was a lounge singer in in the Aladdin, then maybe I can understand need to separate politics from her show, but I don't understand what being in Vegas has to do with anything, how it is more of an outrage than her saying the same thing at a show in LA. It wasn't just tourists in the audience, and it certainly wasn't just Aladdin guests. Nobody stays at the Aladdin. It's bankrupt and it smells like curry in there.

Melon, Proud can believe whatever he wants, even if you don't necessarily agree with it. It's a free country. I don't hate Bush as much as the one and only ProudIllness does, but I certainly don't love him either. Does that make me a bad person?
Also, DSOTM is a fine album, but I don't know if I'd call it the greatest of all-time. Then again, I've been going through a real '70s punk rock phase lately.

Does that make you a bad person? Do you actually think that's what I think? Of course Proud can believe what he wants, as can you, as can I. That's the beauty of America. But it's also my right to point out futility when I see it. Oh and regarding DSOTM, that's a definite for me.

My prediction is that Bush will win a 2nd term and that 2nd term will be nearly as intolerable for the Bush-bashers as the 2nd term of Slick Willie was for the Clinton-bashers. What goes around comes around. You reap what you sow and it's going to be hysterically funny to watch the celebrities pull out their hair for four more years! ;D
