Why is it that when I was in school, Niger was always pronounced "NI-jer" and now on the news they say, "nee-JAIR"? Were they wrong then, are they wrong now, or do they just like to throw changes around to be trendy?

Also kuh-TAR became CUT-ter.

At least I know what happened with "Hailey's Comet."

During one of the time periods when it seemed each news organization had it's own way of pronouncing Niger, some radio show - Laura Ingraham maybe? - did a montage of all the different pronunciations, including some different ones from the same anchor. It was kind of funny.
