The bible is a written collection of great myths and sublime metaphors borrowing heavily on Sumerian and Egyptian own mythologies and its purpose was to be a source of spiritual enlightenment for the elite rather than a book of doctrines designed to teach the ‘truth”.
The Old Testament is not an historical recollection of factual events but the story of the evolution of the people’s understanding of God and the connection between God and humanity.
To establish early on its moral authority over the masses and precedence over other religious currents, the church adopted a literalist, populist and historical approach to those myths; allegories became recognized facts and symbols became incredible miracles.
The Messiah who was supposed to be embodied inside each of us (by reading or hearing individualy about those myths) became the Messiah – embodied inside ONE man – an historical figure and the total embodiment of God. So instead of becoming aware or our own internal power of moral and spiritual transformation (salvation), humanity had to turn to a vain and impossible quest for salvation outside ourselves.
The message of Jesus that was supposed to be humanist, timeless and universal become confined to a single person, time and space you MUST believe in, but the myth, in its meaning/signification, is more important than the historical facts. The Gospels were religious dramas designed to inspire and support faith, comfort the faithfulls and bring new converts to the fold.
Now people who lack in proper judgment and an open mind can quote the Scriptures to the letter, but the only thing they do most of the time is negate the interior truth those myths try to explain.
While Science is the source of knowledge and progress for the human race, religious Faith (not religious dogma) is the way to keep the tiny flame of HOPE for each individual that the Messiah will come in my life and inside of me to awake my conscience and lift my spirit.

Luke, the mammoth they found in 1997 was FULLY intact, organs and all. Underneath it were found plants in their "original green form". I have read the entire report on this dig and what they found. Jarkov mammoth died at the end of winter.
BTW, there is a split on how these mammoths died out, some say starvation others say hunting killed them off. There are many problems with BOTH of these theories though. One major problem with the hunting theory is the lack of tools in the area. You see this is also why there is a split in the archeological world concerning the Bering Strait theory.
The problem with the theory about dying off from lack of food would be that much of the mammoths found had many pounds of vegetation in their stomachs.
So they have once again developed a new theory, that Northern Siberia was warmer and lush at one time, which is indeed true! But other than a VERY dramatic change in the weather can one explain a complete freezing of a mammoth in a VERY quick manner. This goes completely against the whole gradual changes/ice-age theory.

And btw Luke, I only used Behe as one example. I actually disagree with him on evolution. So you can give it up with posting his critics.
He is rocking the boat though.

Well some of us would prefer you and your ilk sit down and shut up, because we're getting seasick and we're in danger of capsizing.

A few posts back you were propping your entire argument on Behe but now you disagree him...this is too good, really Dee, Luke has repeatedly handed you your ass and you just keep coming back for more...part of me would like to admire your conviction but the rest of me...well lets' just say the rest of me is enjoying this discussion.

Ok completely from a historian perspective, leaving out any religous agenda. phil, you REALLY need to check things out before posting. The Bible has a tremendous amount of actual documented historical events. Between other hisorical writings and archeology, there is a tremendous amount of history of wars that have been documented. As a matter of fact, it is ALMOST the entire basis for what historians know about the Hebrew people, along with migrations. THIS IS A FACT. I should know, History is my major. hhmm now why on earth would there be references from Egypt and Sumeria? Well phil thats because the Hebrews traveled quite a bit. Could it be that they lived in Egypt for 400 years as slaves? And yes phil this is real history, not some myth made up. Hmmm what about the Hyksos? THEY RULED Egypt phil, they founded the 15th dynasty, they also introduced the horse and chariot and sheep herding to Egyptian culture. Do you know who the Hyksos were phil? Hyksos 1602, 15th dynasty of Egyptian kings (1650-1558 B.C.E.), called "Shepherd Kings," from Gk. Hyksos, from Egyptian, either hiq shasu "ruler of nomads," or heqa khoswe "chief of foreign lands." They were a semetic group from Palestine and Syria.

Did I not say that I have put up things from both sides and different opinions? Just because I don't agree with him does NOT mean I am going to look at his theories and work. Did you know that a lot of history is written by the opposing force? Therefore you must seperate the agenda from the facts, using a multitude of sources. My god grow up.
