Well, I am looking forward like a crazy thing to the new album coming out this year hopefully!!! It feels like it has been a bit of a low light year for me this year.... this is the kind of boost i really need to make it better!!!
I finally got around to viewing my Perfect Square DVD... what a darn fine concert that would have been to be attending... the band seemed to be in top form, Stipe had energy, and I noticed how much pleasure he was getting from being onstage... he cracked a smile quite a few times, it was great to hear and see...
Loved the DVD!

still yet to buy the dvd, but i'm sure it's awesome. hey, we're talking about a band that succeeds at just about everything they do. and don't tell me reveal isn't a success.
bought out of time (used) on tape, though i already have the cd. hey, it was only 50 cents... plus i picked up reckoning for another 50. should be fun!

I LOVE Reckoning... sometimes even more so than Murmur... I used to play that thing time after time (!) when I first bought it, and I still bring it out for a spin every now and again... in fact I might just get it out again tonight, because my memories of it are so fond!!!
For some reason I really love to play that album in Spring... even though its not even close to Spring here yet, it's the middle of winter, but the fact it reminds me of Spring should perk me up on this grey, overcast rainy Adelaide day!

haha, you like every r.e.m. album, don't you? if i remember correctly, there's one of 'em you don't own, though...
hi-fi? that's my guess. i could've sworn it was fables, but i think you talked about it before...

Got every single one of 'em Proud! And you're right, there's not a one I don't like!
I can't say Fables is my favourite, and I find Life's Rich Pageant most enjoyable, but it sounds like a not yet fleshed out Document alot of the time...
But there are very few bad things I can say about the REM back catalogue... I love this band with a major passion!

i have mixed feelings on fables... i haven't really given it a good listen, and the production doesn't meet my interest. however, i'm betting it's an outstanding record and i just haven't discovered it yet. seems pretty gloomy... heard the band wrote it at depressing times. as far as LRP goes, good record, though i prefer document.
i LOVE document and reveal... also own LRP, out of time, and monster, which are fantastic recordings... just need to listen to the copy of reckoning i have. you got my excited!

Reckoning has such a fond association in my mind... lots of good thoughts linked to it, I listened to it alot during a fairly carefree time of my life, and hence have always enjoyed revisiting it!

that sounds just like the r.e.m. i fell in love with. there's something about the band... they can be serious but sound so fun, so catchy... that southern pop influence (they're from athens, georgia, right? at least that's what i thought i heard)...
edit: oh yeah... these're the church tapes i bought:

Of those Heyday would be my pick.... :-) Again though, I regard the Church in the same way I regard REM.... barely putting a foot wrong!!!
Of Skins and Heart is their debut album, a bit raw and definitely early eighties in sound, although it still has a strong single in "The Unguarded Moment" and alot of strong lyrical amd musical potential!
Remote Luxury is a great little early career EP, some tight songwriting and good playing!
Gold Afternoon Fix was the follow up to their biggest commercial success... Starfish... its good, strong even, but it feels a little less consistently good than Starfish, lots of lovely accoustic tunes and rich melodies though, although a lot quiter and more gentle than previous albums... sort of transitional, between their eighties jangle and the more toned down, darker 90's stuff.
Which leaves me to talk about Heyday... One of my favourite of their albums... great sound to the recording, some ambitious new ideas and just solid songwriting, especially different is "Happy Hunting Ground" a sweet and moving instrumental piece, a thoroughly well written and beautifully executed album, totally overlooked even by their own fans at times. Truly shows off the band in a fully fleshed and amazing way.

today, i listened to a little r.e.m. and the church. my opinions...
the church - heyday: listened to the first half. seemed good, even though this isn't my sort of music usually. kinda reminds me of prog rock. either way, soothing and pleasant on the ears.
r.e.m. - reckoning: wow, what a fun, feel-good record. not the band's best, but it would be a great top record in a lot of other band's catalogs. more of an entire album than one of individual songs.

Reckoning is nice and fun isn't it??! I remember it used to be such a good "escape" album for me!
Heyday can be a somewhat "polished" version of the Church's music, although they did move on to more progressive compositions later in their career as well...

that it is! i've been rediscovering out of time lately, as well. i really like "radio song", especially the guy who comes in and raps. and then you get songs like "losing my religion", "low", "near wild heaven"... it just seems ideal.

When I first heard Out of Time, I remember being really struck by "Low'... it just seemed such apowerful song without any sort of histrionics about it whatsoever... I mean it has the most subtle beat to it, and Peter Buck carries such a subtle but effective guitar line through it, and then Stipe's voice lifts it to such great heights... it's the ultimate in understated, emotional music that just gets into your mind in the most sublime way.

definitely. i believe that the main goal behind music is for it to alter your consciousness... to suck you into another world, where you're absorbed by each aspect of each song. i think r.e.m.'s successfully done that with many albums... out of time being one of them.
note: i love shiny happy people. i had to admit it.
